According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , in the first 11 months of 2023, China continued to be Vietnam's largest agricultural, forestry and fishery export market; of which, the export value to China increased by 18%, while the US and Japan decreased by 17.9% and 9.1%, respectively.

It is forecasted that in the last months of the year, China's demand for goods and food will increase even more to serve the Tet and holidays. This is an opportunity for many Vietnamese agricultural products to increase export turnover to this market.
Many items have advantages
According to the Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade , in the first 11 months of 2023, the export value of fruits and vegetables nationwide is estimated at 5.3 billion USD, an increase of 74.5% over the same period in 2022, far exceeding the figure of 3.36 billion USD for the whole year of 2022. In the structure of exported fruit and vegetable products in the first 10 months of 2023, fruit products contributed greatly to the growth rate; in which, durian, jackfruit, and mango are the fruits with significant growth rates.
Leading in terms of export value are durian reaching 2.07 billion USD, up 606.3%; jackfruit reaching 168.6 million USD, up 35.5%; mango reaching 154 million USD, up 41.4% over the same period in 2022. The reason is that fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market have grown strongly. In the first 10 months of 2023 alone, the export value of fruit and vegetable products to the Chinese market reached 3.2 billion USD, up 164.7% over the same period in 2022.
In addition to durian, Vietnam's banana market share has increased significantly and is the second largest supplier to China, accounting for 28.2% of China's total banana imports in the first 10 months of 2023. Vietnam's potential for exporting fresh and processed bananas to China is still very large because this fruit is harvested year-round, while China tends to increase banana imports from the Vietnamese market due to its favorable geographical location. In addition, China's banana growing area has decreased due to increased costs of agricultural inputs, land rental costs and labor, while many diseases have appeared, making this crop less effective.
Regarding rubber products, in the first 10 months of 2023, Vietnam was the second largest rubber supplier to China with 1.32 million tons, worth 1.75 billion USD, up 15.9% in volume, but down 4.5% in value compared to the same period in 2022. Vietnam's rubber market share accounted for 20% of China's total rubber imports in the first 10 months of 2023, higher than the 18.96% of the first 10 months of 2022.
Regarding seafood, Vietnam is the 7th largest seafood supplier to China, reaching 72.6 million USD in October 2023. In the first 10 months of 2023, China's seafood imports from Vietnam reached 683.9 million USD, down 52.6% over the same period in 2022. The market share of Vietnamese seafood in China's total imports decreased from 9.4% in the first 10 months of 2022 to 4.3% in the first 10 months of 2023. However, in the last months of the year, China's demand for seafood is expected to increase sharply to serve the holidays and Tet, so the amount of imports from Vietnam will increase.
Ensuring supply of agricultural products
According to the Asia-Africa Market Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade, China currently accounts for nearly 54% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export value; including 90% of lychee export output and 80% of dragon fruit export output. In 2023, durian exports to China alone could reach 2.5 billion USD. In addition, China is also the market that consumes more than 90% of Vietnam's cassava and cassava-based products; more than 70% of rubber export output and is Vietnam's third largest seafood export market.
Regarding rubber products, the forecast of the Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade shows that China's demand for rubber imports will continue to increase thanks to the support of economic stimulus policies and support packages for China's automobile industry. World rubber prices from now until the end of the year may move towards the price range of 1,700-1,800 USD/ton if China's economy and its automobile manufacturing industry meet expectations.
It is forecasted that in the coming time, China will increase the import of rubber materials to serve the long-term automobile production plan. The demand for rubber imports for tire production in this country is also increasing. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese rubber exporting enterprises to promote exports to this market.
Regarding fruits and vegetables, in the last month of 2023, fruits and vegetables will continue to grow. However, according to Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the management of fruit growing area codes still has many limitations, especially the lack of close linkage, and the situation of breaking contracts, competing to buy and sell often occurs.
In the coming time, if localities do not have remedial measures, it will significantly affect many types of fruits, even facing the risk of losing the market. Therefore, it is necessary to do a good job of managing the codes of growing areas and packaging facilities to enhance the reputation of fruit and vegetable products.
Recently, the first batch of Vietnamese bird's nest products was also exported to the Chinese market under the Protocol signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China on November 9, 2022. Avanest Vietnam Nutrition Joint Stock Company is the first enterprise to be granted a code by the General Administration of Customs of China to allow the export of two groups of bird's nest products, including refined bird's nest and ready-to-eat bird's nest jars.
China is currently the world's largest consumer of bird's nest products, with a demand of more than 300 tons/year, accounting for about 80% of the global market share. This is an important milestone for Vietnam's bird's nest industry; at the same time, it also contributes to promoting the growth of Vietnam's agricultural exports to China in the coming time.
