The contest is organized by the Labor and Union Magazine in coordination with the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund ( Ministry of Health ), aiming to contribute to the implementation of the National Strategy for Tobacco Harm Prevention to 2030 according to Decision 568 of the Prime Minister.

The Organizing Committee said that the contest will be launched for 1.5 months (from June 30 to August 15, 2025) on the online platform of the Electronic Magazine. This is not only a media playground but also an activity to spread the message of "green living", raising awareness of building a civilized, smoke-free working environment among union members and workers nationwide.

Despite taking place in the context of the Trade Union system streamlining its apparatus and reducing the number of union members, the contest still recorded outstanding results with 57,307 participants, corresponding to 57,307 essays and suggestions sent in. Of these, 3,871 candidates answered 100% of the multiple choice questions correctly - a number considered impressive, reflecting the deep concern of workers for public health issues. Many units showed outstanding response, led by the Ho Chi Minh City Labor Federation with more than 26,000 candidates, followed by the National Defense Labor Union, the Vietnam Medical Labor Union, the Ninh Binh Provincial Labor Federation and the Vietnam Education Labor Union.

Not only the large number of entries was recognized, the quality of the content was also highly appreciated, with thousands of practical ideas, rich in form and full of emotions. Through the summary, the Organizing Committee said that the suggestions focused on four main groups of solutions.

Firstly, regarding propaganda and education, many creative models have been proposed such as "Smoke-free classrooms" integrating smoking refusal skills for students; "Writing letters to smokers" contest in the community; "Smoke-free smiles" and "Smoke-free coffee" movements in enterprises to help the slogan of tobacco prevention become closer and easier to implement.

Second, regarding the construction of a smoke-free working environment, many initiatives have proven to be highly feasible. Notable examples include the “Clean Kitchen - No Smoking” model of Viet Power Company (Ninh Binh) or the professional smoking cessation counseling network at E Hospital - considered models in the health sector.

Third, in terms of supporting workers to quit smoking, community models such as “Health mailbox”, “Self-managed worker group” or “21 days without smoke” challenge have created a supportive environment, helping many people reduce or quit smoking successfully thanks to encouragement from colleagues and family.

Fourth, regarding technology application, many units have taken advantage of official emails, waiting screens, health monitoring applications... to remind union members, in line with the digital transformation trend.

The Organizing Committee recommends that the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund - Ministry of Health support the construction of a specialized information portal and digital platform for tobacco harm prevention communication activities of the Vietnam Trade Union, helping the contest not only stop at the form of a contest but also become a regular channel to update knowledge and provide tools to support smoking cessation for union members and workers.

For the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, it is necessary to consider including the online contest on tobacco harm prevention in the annual work program of the Trade Union organization, considering this as a competitive target to create sustainability.

Strengthen multi-channel communication: Press, social networks, union fanpages, grassroots loudspeakers, short video clips to reach young union members and industrial park workers, where e-cigarettes are on the rise.

Strengthen the replication of existing effective models and build an online database of initiatives and models for tobacco harm prevention and control for reference, study and replication; link smoking cessation with direct benefits such as health care, welfare and rewards. Proactively create healthy alternative spaces (rest rooms, relaxation corners, mini sports areas) to help workers reduce stress without resorting to tobacco. Compile and publish the "Trade Union Handbook on tobacco harm prevention and control" from initiatives collected through the contest.
