Many children have digestive disorders due to hot weather.

Ho Chi Minh City Tam Anh General Hospital recorded a 20% increase in children coming to the clinic due to vomiting and digestive disorders compared to before Tet due to the prolonged hot weather of 37-38 degrees Celsius in the Southern provinces.

On March 18, Dr. Lam Boi Hy, Department of Pediatrics, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that previously, the hospital only admitted 10-20 children due to digestive diseases each day. Currently, the number of children has increased 3-6 times, ranging from 40-60 children. The Emergency Department alone recorded 6-10 children admitted to the hospital every night due to severe vomiting and dehydration.

"Children with digestive diseases are increasing due to hot weather, the habit of lying in front of fans, air conditioners and improper food preservation," said Dr. Hy.

For example, Ms. Quyen's 3-year-old daughter, who lives in Ben Tre , had a high fever, mucus in her stool, and felt tired and lethargic. She went to the hospital with a high fever of 40 degrees and diarrhea 9 times a day. The doctor diagnosed a gastrointestinal infection leading to blood infection and required hospitalization.

Another case is a 4-year-old boy with abdominal pain and vomiting more than 20 times a day for a long time. The doctor diagnosed the boy with two respiratory diseases and digestive disorders at the same time, and he had to be hospitalized for antibiotic treatment and intravenous fluids.

Doctor Boi Hy said that diarrhea, digestive disorders, and food poisoning are often caused by bacteria such as e.coli, campylobacter, listeria, salmonella, botulinum... They have the common characteristic of thriving in environments with temperatures of 5-60 degrees Celsius. Hot weather causes food to spoil and spoil if not properly preserved. If children eat it, bacteria can easily attack, causing digestive disorders, and worse, poisoning.

Gastrointestinal infections are mainly transmitted through food. Organisms including yeast, bacteria or parasites attack the body causing intestinal infections, which can easily lead to complications such as blood poisoning.

The weather in the South is forecast to continue to be hot until the end of April, and doctors predict that the number of children hospitalized with diarrhea will continue to increase.

Doctor Boi Hy explains that children's immune systems are still weak, and there is a risk of disease on top of disease. Unstable weather causes children to lose their appetite, leading to poor resistance and increasing the risk of disease when viruses and bacteria invade. Hot weather makes the body sweat a lot, causing dehydration and electrolyte loss. At this time, food is easily spoiled, contaminated with fungi and bacteria - the cause of gastrointestinal diseases.

In addition, families have the habit of keeping the air conditioner temperature too low or turning on a strong fan blowing directly at children, making them susceptible to colds and pneumonia...

Common symptoms of children coming to the Pediatrics Department include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and fatigue. Some cases of concurrent pharyngitis may include coughing and vomiting.

After about two days of being infected with the virus or bacteria, children may experience symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, fever, and diarrhea that last for 3-10 days. If not examined and treated promptly, children may become dehydrated and lose electrolytes, which can be life-threatening.

To prevent digestive diseases, Dr. Boi Hy recommends that parents choose food carefully, avoid carbonated drinks, reduce cold food intake, drink enough water, and increase green vegetables. Children should eat cooked food and drink boiled water. Families should clean the refrigerator, not store fresh food and cooked food together. Leftover food should not be used after 4-5 days of storage in the refrigerator.
