Which group 'dumped' the VN-Index session like a roller coaster, liquidity 86,000 billion VND?

Domestic institutional investors and securities companies' self-trading groups sold net in yesterday's record liquidity session.

The Vietnamese stock market experienced a volatile trading session like a "roller coaster" on August 5. The VN-Index broke through the 1,580-point mark at one point in the early afternoon session thanks to strong demand spreading widely.

However, the market reversed unexpectedly at the end of the session when active selling pressure increased dramatically during the last trading session of the day, causing the index to quickly narrow its increase and even turn red at times.

However, VN-Index still managed to recover slightly at the last minute, closing at 1,547 points, up 1.24% compared to the previous session.

The biggest highlight of the session was the explosion of liquidity, with the total transaction value on the HoSE reaching VND72,893.2 billion - a record high in history and an increase of 135.6% compared to the previous session.

In the whole market, liquidity reached nearly 86,000 billion VND, an increase of 82.2% compared to the previous session.

Notably, liquidity increased sharply in most industry groups, reflecting an unprecedented level of market participation from both institutional and individual investors.

Sectors that gained points in this session included real estate, banking, securities, steel, food, retail, electrical equipment, water transport, aviation, special finance, investment funds, agricultural and seafood farming, as well as express delivery.

In terms of order matching activities alone, foreign investors and individual investors both reversed to net buying positions.

Of which, foreign investors net bought 678 billion VND, focusing on strong net buying in steel industry stocks, but continued to net sell in the information technology and securities sectors.

Meanwhile, individual investors tend to accumulate bank stocks – the large-cap group that is leading the market in the current recovery. This group has net bought nearly 540 billion VND.

On the other hand, securities companies' self-trading net sold 823 billion VND, domestic organizations (excluding self-trading) net sold nearly 390 billion VND.

Cash flow in session 5-8 also showed a clear shift in capitalization structure.

Specifically, the proportion of cash flow continued to increase significantly in the group of large-cap stocks in the VN30 basket - reflecting the trend of focusing on stocks with good fundamentals and high liquidity.

Meanwhile, cash flow tends to decline in mid-cap (VNMID) and small-cap (VNSML) stocks, showing a certain differentiation in investors' risk appetite in the context of strong market fluctuations.

The trading session on August 5 is a clear demonstration of the return of cash flow in the stock market, but it is also a reminder of the risk of correction when selling pressure is still present, especially at sensitive price zones.

The peak liquidity and the shift of cash flow into large-cap stocks show that investors still expect a recovery, but are also being more selective and cautious in their disbursement decisions.
