Typical greenhouse farming models in Hau Loc

Mr. Mai Van An's greenhouse production model is visited by many people to learn from his experience.

The Bai Trung field area, Hoa Loc commune, is sandy, salty and acidic, so crop yields have not been high for many generations. For a long period of nearly ten years ago, this low-lying field far from residential areas was abandoned. When the Provincial Party Committee and Hau Loc district had a land consolidation policy, Mr. Mai Van An was determined to bid and convert it into a large production area to develop the economy. While working, he learned experience, then used the short term to support the long term, and now a prosperous production area has emerged.

On a total production area of ​​3 hectares, he has developed 2 hectares of net houses to grow yellow melons and cantaloupes in the direction of high-tech agriculture. During the time near Tet and between some melon crops, he also grows additional batches of dahlias and many other short-term flowers to supply the market. According to him, in the first years of production, he encountered many difficulties in choosing crops, had little experience, and limited application of science and technology. However, he learned and gained experience to maintain stable and effective production.

Up to now, the production area with 5 greenhouses has always maintained an area of ​​2 hectares specializing in growing various types of melons and some seasonal flowers. These are all plants with high technical requirements, but the owner of the model has mastered the experience and production process. Each plant is planted in pots, in a greenhouse where temperature and humidity can be adjusted. Notably, the modern drip irrigation system invested in over many years provides water to each plant. With just one operation on a smartphone, even though he is far from home, he can still operate this modern irrigation system. This is also a very water-saving irrigation model, and can replace a lot of traditional manual labor.

Each year, the model produces about 3 melon crops, not including other intercropping crops. According to the model owner's calculations, in years when melon prices are high, the income from the production area reaches more than 1 billion VND, with a profit of about 50%. Currently, this model is creating jobs for 5 local workers. He has signed a contract with a business in Nga Son district to consume the melon products and bring them to many northern provinces.

In Hoa Loc commune, young woman Nguyen Thi Luan in Hoa Trung village also successfully built a typical model of production in greenhouses not only in the commune. As a commune civil servant, assigned as Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association, Chairwoman of the Gardening and Farming Association of Hoa Loc commune, she invested in building a production area as a model for other households. Since 2021, after realizing that the production land in Dong Vau field is very fertile but many households are not interested, she used her family's area to consolidate and rent more from surrounding households to create a production area of ​​more than 1.1 hectares. In addition to producing rice and rotating vegetables throughout the year, she borrowed from the bank to form a 2,500m2 greenhouse area to produce cantaloupe. Having achieved many successes, in recent years, the greenhouse area has been continuously expanded and is now up to 5,000m2.

In the production area located in the middle of the field, workers are hired year-round to develop production. On holidays and after office hours every day, the model owner enthusiastically returns to the greenhouse to participate in labor and direct production. Determined to produce cleanly to create sustainable output, she imports manure and composts organic waste and plant stems into fertilizer. Biological products to treat pathogens must also be licensed brands. From the effectiveness, each year the model brings in a profit of about 300 million VND.

According to the Chairman of the Hau Loc District Gardening and Farming Association, Tran Hong Phong, “Just counting the models of net houses and greenhouses with an area of ​​0.5ha or more, Hau Loc District currently has more than 20 models with a total area of ​​about 30ha. Many models develop 2-3ha, all applying technical advances in production. The crops grown in the district's net houses and greenhouses are mainly cantaloupe, red melon, cucumber, flowers and some seasonal vegetables. Compared to traditional production, the models of growing crops in net houses in Hau Loc are nearly ten times more effective than growing rice.”
