Outstanding issues in teaching and researching American and American studies

On April 11, at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the seminar "Teaching and researching American and American studies: Outstanding issues and main trends" took place.

The seminar was held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary (1995-2025) of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations and the implementation of activities of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the American and American Studies curriculum at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The event attracted the participation of scientists and lecturers from embassies and universities in Vietnam and abroad: US Embassy in Vietnam; Asia Foundation; National Library; Utah State University - USA; Institute for American Studies; Diplomatic Academy; University of Languages ​​and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi...

This is also a forum for scientific exchange, enhancing exchanges for scholars at home and abroad, aiming to build a teaching and research network on American studies and American studies.

Speaking at the Seminar, Prof. Dr. Lai Quoc Khanh - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities said that in 2003, with the support of the US Embassy and the Asia Foundation, the Faculty of International Studies developed a teaching and research program on American and American studies at the University.

"The Department of American Studies under the Faculty of International Studies was established in 2004 to manage and continue to develop the program. Over the past twenty years, the program has achieved many remarkable results, thereby contributing to the development of training and in-depth research on American and American studies at a number of universities and research institutes such as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Hue University, Danang University, Hanoi University and a number of other universities across the country," emphasized Prof. Dr. Lai Quoc Khanh.

According to Prof. Dr. Lai Quoc Khanh, the seminar held this time is an opportunity for all parties to summarize the results of teaching and research on American studies and American studies over the past twenty years in Vietnam and propose new content, approaches and teaching methods; and discuss research on strengthening relations between Vietnam and the United States and other American countries in the coming time.

The opinions raised in this workshop will contribute to policy advice for Vietnam's international integration process as well as promote increasingly close relations between Vietnam and the United States in particular and American countries in general.

Welcoming the efforts of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in organizing the Seminar, Ms. Mary Beth Polley - Cultural and Press Counselor of the US Embassy emphasized that the Seminar with the participation of prestigious scientists in Vietnam and universities around the world will contribute to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States.

According to Ms. Mary Beth Polley, more and more universities in Vietnam are developing majors or research programs on America and the United States, opening up opportunities for research and teaching cooperation, including the training programs and research activities of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Over the past decades, US organizations, universities and research institutes have strongly supported American studies in Vietnam, especially at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. A number of lecturers and students of the school have received scholarships to participate in training programs in the US. The representative of the US Embassy in Vietnam said that US cooperation and support activities will continue to be implemented to support the school's lecturers and students.
