Efforts to have 70% of tea growing area assigned with growing area codes

Resolution No. 11-NQ/TU dated February 3, 2025 of the Provincial Party Committee on tea industry development in the period 2025-2030 sets the target that by 2030 the whole province will have 24,500 hectares of tea, with an output of 300,000 tons of fresh buds, of which 70% of the area will be granted a growing area code. To realize this goal, Thai Nguyen has recently implemented many synchronous solutions and achieved positive results.

Many tea enterprises and cooperatives in Thai Nguyen have focused on expanding the area assigned with growing area codes.

One of the important solutions to expand the area of ​​tea with a growing area code is to promote propaganda at the grassroots level. According to Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, when people's awareness is raised, compliance with regulations on granting growing area codes, especially for tea trees, is increasingly concerned. With the desire to bring products to the world market, many enterprises, cooperatives and large-scale production households have considered growing area codes as a "passport", "trump card", so they actively cooperate with functional agencies in completing documents and legal procedures.

In addition to raising public awareness, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection also introduces and disseminates regulations related to the issuance and management of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities according to TCCS 774:2020/BVT standards on establishing and monitoring growing areas; TCCS 775:2020/BVT on packaging facilities; and requirements on plant quarantine and food safety of import markets to tea producers.

Notably, in addition to disseminating regulations on granting growing area codes, households and tea production units in need are also guided by the Department of Agriculture and Environment on how to record cultivation diaries, apply planting techniques, care, and use fertilizers and pesticides according to the "4 rights" principle, thereby improving production efficiency while protecting the environment.

According to Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Phu Do Safe Tea Cooperative Hoang Van Tuan, the support of all levels and functional sectors in implementing the process and procedures when building tea growing area codes has helped people "break" many things. Many long-term tea growing areas in Tan Cuong have been granted growing area codes, contributing to building the Thai Nguyen tea brand. It can be affirmed that thanks to the synchronous implementation of many solutions, people's awareness has been raised, the tea growing area granted growing area codes in Thai Nguyen has continuously increased.

Currently, the province has 74 tea growing area codes, an increase of 10 codes in just the last 3 months. Of these, 49 are for domestic consumption and 25 are for export, with an area of ​​over 513 hectares and an output of over 6,400 tons.

Growing area codes become an important factor in improving the quality of Thai Nguyen tea.

Notably, the growing area codes are all operated stably, ensuring technical requirements. Many large-scale production cooperatives have proactively built and managed growing area codes.

In the coming time, to increase the number of tea growing area codes, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment will both manage and monitor the areas that have been granted, and step up propaganda and guidance for localities to complete registration documents. In particular, tea growers in concentrated production areas will be supported in attaching growing area codes to serve traceability and meet export requirements to demanding markets.

The establishment of growing area codes helps ensure tea products are of quality, food safety, have clear origins, and serve domestic consumption and export needs well. This is the right direction, and the province pays special attention to key crops. However, to achieve the goal of having 70% of the total 24,500 hectares of tea being granted growing area codes by 2030, it requires concerted and persistent efforts from all levels and sectors, along with the joint efforts of the people.
