Following in the footsteps of his wushu idol, a Tay ethnic boy won his first SEA Games gold medal

On the morning of May 12, 2023, at the Chroy Changvar Stadium in the capital Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Vietnamese wushu athlete Nong Van Huu won the gold medal in the men's stick + men's knife event, with a total score of 19.343. In each event, he was awarded 9.673 points.

This is the second time Nong Van Huu has participated in the SEA Games. At the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, he won 2 bronze medals in a total of 3 competitions: men's sword, men's boxing and men's stick.

“I don’t know what to say. Happy, so happy. This is my biggest dream and today I have achieved it,” Nong Van Huu exclaimed happily.

This is only the second time Nong Van Huu has attended the SEA Games.

Nong Van Huu was born in 1999 and is an athlete of Lang Son delegation. This is only the second SEA Games that he has participated in. Before Nong Van Huu, Pham Quoc Khanh was the best male athlete of Vietnam in these events. At the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, in the male knife event, Pham Quoc Khanh won the gold medal and Nong Van Huu won the bronze medal. Talking about his senior on the day he won the first SEA Games gold medal, Nong Van Huu said that Quoc Khanh was the one who helped him a lot in the process of preparing for international competitions.

“Many people ask me how I feel about being Khanh’s successor. Khanh is my idol. Since I started training, I have only watched Khanh. Khanh is the one who taught me a lot and passed on his international competition experience to me. I just hope to follow Khanh’s footsteps to compete in the international arena.

At SEA Games 31, Nong Van Huu won 2 bronze medals.

This year, the Vietnamese wushu team faced many difficulties when some key players retired from competition (Pham Quoc Khanh, Dang Tieu Binh,...) and many events were combined, so the number of medals was very limited. Yesterday (May 11), wushu beauty Duong Thuy Vi excellently won the gold medal in the women's spear and sword events on her 30th birthday.
