Can Gio farmers "play big" investing billions in high-tech shrimp farming

Shrimp farming is promoted by Ho Chi Minh City and is considered a key aquaculture product. In Can Gio, people boldly apply technology to build highly effective shrimp farming models.

Can Gio promotes high-tech shrimp farming model

Ho Chi Minh City has identified shrimp as the city's main aquaculture product. Shrimp farming is mainly concentrated in 4 communes in the north of Can Gio district (Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong, Tam Thon Hiep, Ly Nhon) and 2 communes in Nha Be district (Hiep Phuoc and Nhon Duc). Shrimp farming in Binh Chanh district is not much, only concentrated in communes with saline water sources such as Da Phuoc and Phong Phu.

The agricultural sector has implemented many measures to expand the area, increase the value and output of farmed shrimp. As the leading locality in shrimp farming in the city, Can Gio district has nearly 5,000 hectares of shrimp farming, of which about 1,700 hectares are raised in ponds. The shrimp farming models in the district were initially mainly in the direction of intensive, semi-intensive, extensive, and improved extensive farming, mainly distinguished based on the farming density and management measures during the farming process.

In recent years, shrimp farming has encountered many difficulties due to weather and other factors that cause many diseases. Many farmers have lost everything due to diseases. To prevent and control diseases, some farmers have used drugs and unsafe chemicals, affecting the environment as well as human health. To limit this situation, many shrimp farming households have focused on investing in modern equipment, applying scientific and technical measures, and high technology to improve the quality and productivity of shrimp, thereby increasing income.

Can Gio farmers "play big" investing billions in high-tech shrimp farming

The total initial cost for 1 hectare of indoor shrimp farming is up to billions of VND, including building settling ponds, building houses to cover the ponds, lining the bottom of the pond, installing a bottom oxygen fan system, etc. All shrimp ponds are designed as floating ponds. Instead of digging the pond deep into the ground using the traditional method, only dig about 30cm deep, then build a bank 1.7-2m above ground level.

The high-tech shrimp farming model using net houses, pond bottom lining, water treatment machines... with an investment capital of up to billions of VND/ha is being enthusiastically implemented by many farming households in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City.

Currently, shrimp farming models have changed in a more specific direction, ensuring sustainability, applying and developing high technology such as: shrimp farming model according to 2-3 stage process, semi-biofloc farming model, farming model using microorganisms... and using auxiliary equipment to produce quality shrimp products, ensuring economic and social efficiency and minimizing impact on the environment.

However, in reality, most shrimp farmers do not follow any standard model but utilize multiple technologies from advanced shrimp farming models to complement each other. The level of efficiency achieved varies between farming facilities, depending on the level, capacity to receive and apply technology, financial capacity of the farmer and other supporting conditions.

Optimizing shrimp farming process for big profits

In practice, the effective high-tech shrimp farming model in Can Gio district is built in the form of shrimp farming according to a multi-stage process combined with the use of microorganisms throughout the farming process and supported by auxiliary technological equipment that is being applied and replicated by shrimp farmers.

The high-tech shrimp farming model effectively combines the advantages of multi-stage shrimp farming, giving high and stable productivity (25-40 tons/ha), shortening the farming time to 70-90 days/crop; less affected by the environment and external diseases.

Thanks to that, farmers achieve high profits compared to the conventional farming model of 30-35% and create jobs, improve income and life for shrimp farmers.

In addition to choosing a suitable shrimp farming model, choosing technology and equipment to support production is also extremely important to help save costs, time, effort and bring many practical values to shrimp farmers.

In recent years, the high-tech shrimp farming model CPF-Combine Program including: CPF-Green House, CPF-Turbo Program and 3C program has been widely replicated by farmers in Can Gio district. This is the direction for successful shrimp farming as well as economic efficiency many times higher than shrimp farming in earthen ponds.

Some effective shrimp farming technologies and equipment used locally include: using automatic shrimp feeding machines to help manage feed well, help shrimp grow quickly, reduce production costs, and reduce pond environmental pollution; using pond environmental monitoring and control systems that can monitor pond water parameters 24/7, helping farmers make decisions and respond promptly to environmental changes; water treatment equipment using ultrasonic and electrochemical technology both saves input costs and minimizes the overuse of drugs and chemicals.

However, shrimp farming also faces many challenges in terms of farming infrastructure, farming environment, fluctuations in input material prices for the farming process, diseases, and the problem of converting aquaculture land to other land.

In order for shrimp farming to continue to be maintained and developed, in addition to solutions for disease management in shrimp and aquaculture land management, it is necessary to find and optimize the shrimp farming process to ensure sustainability and bring stable profits to shrimp farmers.

To do that, the agricultural sector needs to build links between people - businesses - scientists and the State. In addition, the sector needs to create chains of links, horizontal and vertical links in production and farming; diversify post-harvest products, and enhance product promotion.

In particular, farmers need to comply with crop seasons and farming techniques; develop and apply safe farming standards to meet market demand; build farming models that adapt to climate change. Along with that, strengthen quarantine and check the quality of breeding stock before releasing. Strengthen disease prevention; encourage and invest in research on disease prevention and treatment and environmental treatment in farming areas.
