Farmers in Sap Vat commune take care of round mangoes.

Xuan Tien Agricultural Cooperative, Sap Vat Commune, has 60 hectares of round mango, including 20 hectares of ancient round mango and 40 hectares of newly planted round mango, 100% of the area is located in the geographical indication area. Mr. Ha Vien Lam, Deputy Director of Xuan Tien Agricultural Cooperative, said: The Cooperative has cooperated with households with ancient mango gardens to invest in renovation. Coordinated with the District Agricultural Service Center to instruct members on pruning techniques, prevent old tree borers; implemented a new model of planting round mango grafted from the original variety. Thanks to that, the entire mango area of the Cooperative has developed well, yielding 10-12 tons/ha. It is expected that this year, the Cooperative's round mango will yield about 300 tons.

In the past 4 years, members of Xuan Tien Cooperative have focused on applying planting techniques according to VietGAP and organic processes, investing in automatic irrigation technology, using organic fertilizers and not spraying herbicides, improving fruit quality.

Mr. Quang Van Bun, a member of Xuan Tien Cooperative, shared: The time when mangoes flower and bear fruit is during the dry season. For the past 3 years, with guidance from the Cooperative, the family has installed a water supply system for irrigation to ensure a high fruit set rate and even growth. For the past month, there have been some rains in the area, and the family is focusing on fertilizing the trees to maximize fruit yield. With 2 hectares of round mangoes, the family is expected to harvest 18 tons of fruit this season.

In Chieng Pan, the commune coordinated with the district's professional staff to propagate and mobilize people to take care of the old round mango area, use some pesticides to prevent fruit borers; use reasonable fertilizers to nourish the fruit, water, select mangoes that meet standards and have beautiful appearance to keep and prune the ones that do not meet quality standards to keep the tree healthy.

Mr. Ha Van Du's family, Chieng Phu village, Chieng Pan commune, is growing over 1 hectare of round mango. Since 2018, with support from the Vietnam Agricultural Institute for seeds, fertilizers and transfer of planting techniques from the parent tree, up to now, the family's round mango area has developed well, producing large fruits, weighing from 180-200 grams/fruit, overcoming the disadvantages of large seeds and more fibers than before, with an average annual income of over 200 million VND. His family has proactively sourced water by digging ponds, spreading tarps on the hilltop, storing rainwater, and drilling wells; investing nearly 100 million VND to install water pipes from the pond, and economically watering the mangoes.

Mr. Du shared: The process from when the fruit is young to when it is ripe takes about 4 months. Without proper care, fertilization and adequate irrigation, the tree will have dry roots, fall off, crack and reduce productivity. The family actively watered and fertilized the first time in mid-March to limit the process of young fruit falling and fertilized the second time in late April, speeding up the fruit development process to reach maximum size. Up to now, the fruit has grown round and evenly, has a beautiful appearance, and has no signs of pests or diseases. It will be harvested around the end of May, with an expected yield of 9 tons of fruit.

The entire Yen Chau district has nearly 300 hectares of round mango, of which 177 hectares have been granted geographical indication registration certificates in Chieng Pan and Sap Vat communes. This year, the expected output of round mango is about 1,550 tons. With its rich sweetness and characteristic aroma, in recent years, Yen Chau round mango has become known and favored by consumers.

Mr. Lo The Thi, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, shared: The district has directed specialized agencies to assign technical staff in charge of communes in the geographical indication area and neighboring communes to guide people in taking care of them according to VietGAP and organic processes, improving the quality and yield of round mangoes. Mobilizing people to expand the area from the original variety, not crossbreeding from varieties of external origin, and not purchasing mangoes from other regions during harvest to mix and sell in the market. The district has directed specialized departments and cooperatives in the area to well manage the growing area, connect consumption, and introduce round mango products; support product packaging and labels, open points of sale and introduce genuine round mangoes; create conditions for cooperatives to participate in fairs, trade promotion programs, and promote Yen Chau round mango products to consumers.

This year, Yen Chau District People's Committee organizes the 6th Mango Festival, scheduled to take place for 3 days, from May 24-26 in Kha village, Sap Vat commune. This is a village with great potential and advantages for developing community tourism, with dozens of hectares of ancient round mango trees and located in the geographical indication area, along with many attractive activities, such as: Round mango picking competition; exhibition competition, creating art from mango and booths of agricultural products, small handicrafts typical of communes and towns; visiting and experiencing mango gardens, along with many folk games, xoe dance competitions... Through the festival, the aim is to promote the brand of Yen Chau round mango and honor mango growers; introduce the land and people of Yen Chau to a large number of tourists.

Attention to brand building, conservation, breed development and image promotion has contributed to the increasingly affirming of Yen Chau round mango brand. Hopefully this year, Yen Chau round mango will continue to have a good harvest, good price, expand the market, and bring high economic efficiency to farmers.
