Hot issue of agricultural product and agricultural material prices

The story of agricultural product prices and fresh fruits being stuck in a vicious cycle of unstable output, and the price of agricultural input materials constantly escalating while their quality is not well controlled... has always been a "hot" issue in the agricultural sector over the past time.

This is also one of the contents discussed frankly in the dialogue between the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee and farmers that just took place.

Suffering from falling agricultural product prices, rising material prices

In 2025, agricultural exports in general and fresh fruits in particular will face many difficulties, and domestic market consumption will be slower than in previous years. This is the reason why prices of many agricultural products, especially fresh fruits, will fall sharply.

Director of Suoi Lon Mango Cooperative (in Xuan Loc district) Nguyen The Bao said that in the recent harvest, mango farmers had many concerns because of the sharp drop in mango prices. Specifically, last year, Taiwanese mangoes were exported for nearly 30,000 VND/kg, but now the price has dropped to only 1,000 VND/kg. Mango farmers are bitterly letting ripe mangoes fall all over their gardens because at the above selling price, the money from selling mangoes is not enough to cover the harvest.

According to Mr. Bao, trade promotion activities are organized regularly but the story of rescuing fresh fruits, including mangoes, still recurs. How to avoid rescuing agricultural products is a difficult problem for Dong Nai and the whole country.

Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Hoang emphasized that the agricultural sector needs to focus more on removing difficulties and obstacles, minimizing the negative impacts of epidemics, market fluctuations, and natural disasters; strengthening the inspection and control of agricultural materials at all stages, from production to business, etc., to minimize losses for farmers.

This is not just a matter of mangoes, even durian - the "king of fruits" that ranks top in terms of profit - currently has many potential market risks.

Director of Xuan Dinh Agricultural Service and Trading Cooperative (Xuan Loc District) Dang Thi Thuy Nga said that one of the requirements of the large Chinese market when importing durian is to pass the Cadmium (heavy metal) test. Currently, the Southeast region has not had any samples of products contaminated with this substance, so traders are focusing on buying durian from the province at good prices. However, farmers are very worried that the use of fertilizers or other materials is the cause of durian being contaminated with Cadmium and other banned substances. Farmers hope that the authorities will strengthen the inspection of agricultural materials so that the products meet export standards.

Sharing the same view, Le Duy Phuong, Head of the Tra Co Commune Farmers' Association (Tan Phu District), expressed his frustration with the low selling price of agricultural products, while the price of agricultural input materials increased, causing difficulties for farmers. He suggested that the provincial government and relevant agencies have solutions to increase the price of agricultural products and bring the price of agricultural materials to a level suitable for the production situation. In addition, poor quality products and fake foods are currently flooding the market, and solutions need to be found so that people can have a safe life.

Increase competitive advantage for agricultural products

Raising hot issues of the agricultural sector today, farmers want agricultural products in general, fresh fruits in particular, to have sustainable output, and to build agricultural product brands with quality.

Director of Suoi Lon Mango Cooperative Nguyen The Bao shared that for fresh fruits, when the time comes, they must be harvested and cannot be stopped. The current bottleneck is that in the production areas, there is a lack of storage facilities to store fresh fruits during peak harvests or when the market is difficult. Therefore, farmers hope that the province will increase the attraction of enterprises to invest in deep processing of fresh fruits. Currently, most mango processing factories import mangoes from Cambodia for processing. The reason is that farmers still produce on a small and fragmented scale, while the cooperative does not have the capital to consume products for its members. The problem of helping farmers store fresh fruits and process them deeply is that there must be enterprises located right in the raw material area. For the past 2 years, the cooperative has built a small-scale factory including a cold storage warehouse to store goods and pre-process them to supply to processing enterprises. However, implementing this model, the cooperative is facing many problems with regulations and policies. Therefore, the State needs to create mechanisms and policies to support enterprises and cooperatives in building preservation and preliminary processing facilities right in production areas.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Tran Lam Sinh commented that the requirements of both domestic and export markets for agricultural product quality are increasingly high. Recently, some growing areas and fresh fruit packaging facilities for export have been found to be counterfeit. Violators will have their growing area codes and packaging facility codes revoked. Recovery takes a lot of time and effort, and farmers lose the opportunity to participate in the export market. It is recommended that cooperatives and farmers participate in the control process, build a community control mechanism in the system, and provide transparent information so that Vietnamese agricultural products can create consumer confidence in their reputation and quality.
