The Mayon volcano erupted about 500 km southeast of the Philippine capital, increasing seismic activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PIVS) warned on July 4.
PIVS said it maintained alert level 3 on a scale of 5 for the Southeast Asian nation's most active volcano despite a series of weak volcanic earthquakes that continued to increase in intensity.
PIVS warned of an increasing risk of a dangerous eruption at Mayon volcano, saying it was closely monitoring the increase in seismic energy release.
The 2,460-meter-high Mayon volcano, a cone-shaped volcano located in Albay province, began erupting on June 8, forcing the Philippine government to evacuate thousands of people at the foot of the mountain.
PIVS reiterates the need to avoid the permanent danger zone of 6 km. Communities within a 7-8 km radius around the volcano should prepare in case the eruption becomes more dangerous.
Mayon Volcano last erupted in 2018, forcing the evacuation of more than 23,000 people from nine cities.
