This year, Mr. Nguyen Van Trach's family in Duc Long commune raised 35 cages of crispy carp, which are now ready for harvest.

"This year, the price of crispy carp is good and there is little loss of fish. I harvest 6.5-7 tons of crispy carp from each cage," said Mr. Trach, adding that his family earns a profit of 90-100 million VND from each cage of fish when harvested and sold.

Mr. Nguyen Van Trach is currently the Deputy Director of the Chien Thang Agricultural and Aquaculture Services Cooperative. He is currently raising 80 cages of various types of fish, mainly carp, red tilapia, and black catfish. "If we count my child's cage, my family is raising 160 cages of fish," said Mr. Trach.

With the largest number of fish cages raised on the river in Bac Ninh province, each year Mr. Trach's family imports 1,500 - 2,000 tons of bran to serve both family fish farming and supply to members of the cooperative raising fish in cages.

"The most important thing in raising fish in cages on rivers is to be persistent, choose good breeds, quality feed and control diseases to be effective," said Mr. Trach.

According to Mr. Trach, the time to raise a batch of crispy carp usually lasts from 19 to 21 months, of which the time to raise the fry and embryos is about 14 to 15 months. When there is a source of embryos, households select and classify carp weighing from 2.5 to 5 kg to create crispiness by feeding them with fava beans imported from Australia for 5 to 6 months.

Australian broad beans will be soaked directly in water for 12-24 hours (depending on air temperature) to soften the seeds for easy eating by fish and create beneficial bacteria for fish.

By feeding broad beans to change the structure of fish meat, increase meat quality, help fish meat have the right toughness and crispness. At the stage of carp creating crispness, fish often gain very little weight, mainly increase firmness, toughness and crispness.

Chien Thang Agricultural and Aquaculture Services Cooperative was established in September 2019 with 11 members and a total of 170 cages.

To date, the cooperative has 15 members with about 400 fish cages on the Duong River. For households raising many cages like Mr. Trach's, the total annual income is about 3.5-4 billion VND; the remaining members of the cooperative all have high incomes, from 300-500 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province, said that cage fish farming, especially farming of specialty fish such as catfish, crispy carp, cold water fish in the river, is still maintained and changes the structure of farmed fish in the direction of increasing economic value.

Accordingly, cage fish productivity, cage fish output and livestock and aquaculture value ensure to maintain growth rate, contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the whole Bac Ninh province.

Up to now, Bac Ninh province has 157 households raising fish in cages in 29 villages in 21 communes in 6/8 districts, towns and cities with 2,700 cages, an increase of 2.7% over the same period in 2023 (an increase of 71 cages). The average productivity for a 108 m3 cage (6 m x 3 m x 6 m) is currently 4.5-5 tons/cage/batch.
