The project to build a grade-separated interchange between Ring Road 3.5 and Thang Long Avenue, with a total investment of nearly VND2,400 billion, has officially entered the tunneling phase after more than 6 months of implementation. This key project is expected to complete the traffic infrastructure network in the West of Hanoi, resolve bottlenecks and promote socio -economic development in the area.

The project to build a grade-separated intersection between Ring Road 3.5 and Thang Long Avenue (An Khanh Commune) was approved by the Hanoi People's Committee.
The project to build a grade-separated intersection between Ring Road 3.5 and Thang Long Avenue (An Khanh Commune) was approved by the Hanoi People's Committee and is scheduled to be implemented in the period 2022-2026. From the end of April 2025, the project will begin construction after completing the site handover.

Urgent construction progress

According to records at the end of October, the project site in An Khanh commune is operating at full capacity. Dozens of heavy machinery such as excavators, pile drilling machines, tower cranes and a large number of workers are working continuously to ensure progress. Many important items have gradually taken shape, especially the construction of steel structures for branch bridges and the start of tunnel excavation.

Workers are urgently installing the steel frame to prepare for the construction of the rough structure for the turbine branch bridge project.
A series of heavy machinery such as excavators, pile drilling machines, tower cranes have been mobilized to the maximum. Workers are urgently assembling steel frames to prepare for the construction of the rough structure for the turbine branch bridge. In the photo, on the side of Ring Road 3.5, there are still factories that have not been relocated.

Engineering design of modern intersections

The complex design includes a direct tunnel and a turbine-shaped overpass system to effectively divide traffic flow and minimize conflicts between vehicles.

Underpass category

The underpass is built in the direction of Le Trong Tan Street extension (currently Hoang Tung Street) connecting with National Highway 32. The tunnel has a total length of 975m, with a scale of 4 lanes. The tunnel structure includes:

  • Closed tunnel: 150m long, underground under Thang Long Boulevard.
  • Open tunnel: 157.5m long on Hoang Tung street side.
  • Retaining wall: Total length 220m.
The project started digging the tunnel with the section under Thang Long Avenue, designed as a 150m long closed tunnel.
The section under Thang Long Avenue is designed as a 150m long closed tunnel, while the Hoang Tung side is designed as an open tunnel 157.5m long, with a 220m long retaining wall. Currently, the project has started digging the tunnel.

Overpass and turbine branches

The project has 4 turbine bridge branches using prestressed reinforced concrete slab girders, with a total length of 2,346m. Each bridge branch is 8.8m wide, with 2 lanes for motor vehicles. In addition, auxiliary items such as wheel barriers with a total length of 619m are also being deployed synchronously.

Construction of prestressed reinforced concrete girder turbine branch bridge items.
In addition, the project is also constructing wheel curbs with a length of 619m at 8 locations after the abutment, a turbine branch bridge with a prestressed reinforced concrete girder with a length of 2,346m/4 branches, a bridge width of 8.8m, and 2 lanes for motor vehicles.

Project overview

The Ring Road 3.5 - Thang Long Avenue Interchange Project was approved by the Hanoi People's Committee with a total investment of about 2,384 billion VND. The investor is the Hanoi City Civil Works Construction Investment Project Management Board. According to the plan, the construction period is expected to last about 1,000 days (more than 3 years), in the implementation period of 2022-2026.

The underpass and other intersection items worth nearly 2,400 billion VND are gradually taking shape.
After many months of urgent construction, the 3.5 ring road tunnel and other items of the nearly 2,400 billion "super intersection" project are gradually taking shape, with the hope of soon bringing a modern traffic appearance, contributing to completing the infrastructure network in the West of Hanoi.
