Mr. Huynh Van Trieu, Cong Thien Hung hamlet, Long Duc commune, Tra Vinh city (Tra Vinh province) said that since the beginning of the year, the price of dry coconut has been high; especially in the past 6 months, it has always been above 100,000 VND/dozen, so gardeners are very excited.
Mr. Trieu's family converted 2,500 square meters of ineffective rice land to coconut farming about 20 years ago, providing a fairly stable income compared to previous rice farming.
Because it does not require much investment, with a productivity of 1 thousand/month (1 thousand = 1,200 fruits), his family's coconut garden brings in an income of more than 80 million VND/year, much higher than growing rice on the same land.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh province, Le Van Dong, said: In recent years, the coconut area of Tra Vinh has grown strongly due to people changing the crop structure, renovating mixed gardens, ineffective gardens, and especially converting many rice growing areas to coconut growing areas.
By the end of 2024, the whole province will have 27,520 hectares of coconut trees with more than 7.2 million trees, an increase of more than 8,200 hectares compared to 2014.

Tra Vinh's coconut acreage ranks second in the country, only after Ben Tre province, concentrated in the districts of Cang Long, Tieu Can, Chau Thanh, Cau Ke, Tra Cu and Tra Vinh city.
The Vietnamese Government has officially included coconut trees in the list of national key industrial crops, assigning the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop a development project from 2021.
Of the province's coconut growing area, more than 1,400 hectares have been granted 19 domestic growing area codes and nearly 1,400 hectares have been granted 10 export growing area codes. Currently, the province has 9 coconut growing areas with a total area of over 1,240 hectares and 2 packaging facilities have been granted export codes, qualified to export fresh coconuts to the Chinese market.
The locality is also proposing that the Plant Protection Department consider and negotiate with the importing country (China) to continue granting export growing area codes for 8 coconut growing areas of more than 1,000 households in Long Thoi commune, Tieu Can district on a total area of more than 450 hectares. In particular, the province is gradually moving towards participating in the carbon market of the coconut industry.
According to Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien, identifying coconut as a key crop, in recent times, Tra Vinh province has focused on many solutions to encourage and develop the coconut value chain; in which, focusing on building models of transferring scientific and technical advances, calling on businesses to invest in product consumption, focusing on developing coconut trees in an organic direction associated with granting growing area codes to serve domestic consumption and export.
Recently, the Standing Committee of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee issued Directive No. 48-CT/TU dated October 11, 2024 on strengthening the Party's leadership in developing organic coconuts associated with the issuance of codes for growing areas in the province to boost exports. Accordingly, the province has proposed many specific tasks and solutions to develop coconut trees.
