Trump says he was prosecuted for mishandling sensitive documents

President Joe Biden's administration informed Mr. Trump's lawyers that he had been indicted, Mr. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social, according to Reuters.

"I never thought that could happen to a former President of the United States," Trump wrote. Trump also wrote that he had been summoned to appear in a federal court in Miami, Florida on June 6. "I am innocent," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Previously, some US media reported that Mr. Trump was indicted on 7 charges related to handling classified documents and obstructing justice. Reuters today, June 9, quoted some sources as saying that former President Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury for keeping classified government documents and obstructing justice.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for special counsel Jack Smith, who is handling the investigation into Mr. Trump’s handling of classified material, also declined to comment.

The US Justice Department is investigating whether Mr Trump mishandled classified documents he retained after leaving the White House in 2021.

In a sworn statement to a federal court last year, an FBI agent said there was probable cause to believe that several crimes had occurred, including obstruction and unlawful retention of sensitive records.

Nearly a year ago, investigators seized about 13,000 documents from Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, including 100 marked secret, though one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers previously said all the classified records had been returned to the government.

Former President Trump has previously defended his retention of documents that could indicate he declassified them while he was president. However, Trump has not provided evidence of this and his lawyers have declined to make the related argument in court filings, according to Reuters.
