According to New Atlas , in an initiative to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport in the Gulf of Finland, operator Viking Line announced details of plans to put the world's largest electric passenger ferry, Helios, into operation in the early 2030s.

Viking Line is aiming for a 195-meter-long, 30-meter-wide vessel. Its all-electric powertrain will reach a top speed of 23 knots (42.5 km/h), drawing energy from a battery pack of 85-100 MWh.
“Helios marks a new era in maritime transport, just as the first sailing ships, steamships and motor ships did in their time,” said Jan Hanses, chief executive of Viking Line. “This concept proves that large-scale zero-emission shipping is no longer a utopia.”
The result of a collaboration between Viking Line, the Rauma shipyard and several other partners, Helios is designed to carry up to 2,000 passengers and 650 vehicles across the Gulf of Finland from the port of Helsinki to Tallinn in northern Estonia on a 80km journey and back. It will also be capable of carrying cargo. The electric ferry is expected to require at least 30 MWh of charging, which will take place when the ship is in port.
“Increasingly tight regulations put a heavy burden on fossil fuel-based maritime transport, but zero-emission technology will allow us to increase capacity on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. Our goal is to order two electric vessels that will double our current year-round capacity,” said Hanses.
Viking Line says its fleet emissions have dropped by nearly a third over the past 15 years, switching to low-sulfur fuel in the early 1990s. The company launched its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) passenger ship in 2013 and is adding another smart ferry model in 2022.
