The only iron ferry connecting to the mainland has broken down, leaving thousands of residents of Tam Hai island commune (Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province) struggling to travel by motorboat.
Leaders of Tam Hai commune People's Committee (Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province) confirmed that the only iron-hulled ferry connecting Tam Hai island commune with the mainland broke down this morning (November 8). The incident has disrupted the lives and work of the local people.
Residents of Tam Hai island commune now travel by wooden boats after their iron ferry broke down.
Accordingly, early on the morning of November 8th, the iron ferry that regularly operates on the Tam Quang – Tam Hai route, which is the main means of transportation for 10,000 residents of Tam Hai island commune, broke down.
The incident occurred at a time when residents of Tam Hai island commune needed to travel to the mainland for work, causing hardship for the people. Hundreds of people had to crowd onto fishermen's motorboats to get ashore.
By afternoon of the same day, at the Truong Giang River ferry terminal connecting Tam Quang commune and Tam Hai island commune, only one motorboat was carrying people back and forth.
The small wooden boat, with its low carrying capacity, could only transport groups of about 10 people at a time. Goods being transported to the ferry terminal were piling up.
The people of Tam Hai commune are hoping that the authorities will soon build a new ferry to make travel more convenient for them.
People and their goods sit waiting for wooden boats to take them across the river.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Hung, Chairman of the Tam Hai Commune People's Committee, said that the breakdown of the iron ferry was unavoidable due to its long operating history. The commune has a spare wooden ferry, but it is currently undergoing inspection and registration.
Mr. Hung added that the iron ferry is currently undergoing repairs and will not be able to resume operations for at least another three days.
Last September, the People's Committee of Nui Thanh District approved the investment project to build two new passenger ferries to transport passengers to Tam Hai Island.
Accordingly, two newly built ferries with a carrying capacity of approximately 30 tons will ensure the transportation of passengers, motorbikes, bicycles, cars, and other vehicles across the Truong Giang River on the Tam Quang – Tam Hai route.
The total investment for the two ferries is nearly 25 billion VND, with the Tam Hai Commune People's Committee as the investor and the project to be implemented in the period 2024 – 2026.
According to Mr. Hung, the project to build two new ferries has just been approved by the district and is currently undergoing procedures to be submitted to higher authorities, including the selection of contractors for ferry construction. It is expected to be put into service by the end of 2025.
