Refuting the distortion of Vietnam's great victory - Part 1: From the lesson of the collapse of the Soviet Union to the strategy of sabotage against Vietnam

In 2025, Vietnam solemnly celebrates the 50th anniversary of the great victory in the 1975 Spring General Offensive and Uprising - a brilliant milestone marking the successful end of our people's resistance war against the US, saving the country, and fully implementing President Ho Chi Minh's guiding ideology of "fighting to drive the US out, fighting to overthrow the puppet regime", liberating the South, and unifying the country. Meanwhile, reactionary forces and political opportunists have intensified their propaganda and sabotage activities. They have spread arguments distorting the nature of our army and people's resistance war against the US, saving the country, even claiming that: "The US never invaded Vietnam"!?... These dangerous arguments and tricks must be exposed and refuted.

Terrible "weapon" of destruction

After World War I, American financial corporations decided to invest heavily in Nazi Germany to use this force to wage a "proxy war" in the form of World War II to destroy the Soviet Union. After realizing that the Soviet Union was fully capable of defeating Nazi Germany, the United States was forced to join the war as an "ally" with the Soviet Union to prevent Moscow from liberating all of Europe. Therefore, immediately after the end of World War II, the United States and its Western allies immediately launched the Cold War to disintegrate the Soviet Union. Therefore, the Cold War was also called by the West as the "win without fighting" strategy. To achieve this goal, the United States led the West in conducting an information war with the core content of distorting the role of the Soviet Union in World War II, viewing the Soviet Union as a country that "invaded Europe" rather than liberating Europe from the danger of German fascism.

The campaign to distort the role of the Soviet Union in World War II was carried out by the US and the West with increasing intensity during the years of "reform" in the Soviet Union (1985-1991). Under the guise of "publicization" to implement the "new political thinking" of the leadership group pursuing the ideology of betraying socialism led by M. Gorbachev and A. Yakovlev, the media apparatus controlled by reactionary forces and political opportunists received instructions and funding from the US and Western countries to carry out a massive, public propaganda campaign with unprecedented intensity to distort the role of the Soviet Union in World War II. Directly directing this distortion campaign was none other than A. Yakovlev - an American spy of influence assigned by M. Gorbachev to be the Head of the Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Although history has recorded in internationally recognized legal documents that the Soviet Union sacrificed 27 million people in the extremely heroic struggle to liberate humanity from the domination of Nazi Germany and Japanese militarism, reactionary forces and political opportunists conducted a campaign to distort that “the Soviet Union invaded Europe” during World War II. They even fabricated fantastic stories that Soviet Red Army soldiers looted and raped women in areas that had just been liberated from Nazi Germany!? Notably, the campaign to distort the role of the Soviet Union in World War II was combined with arguments that distorted the values of socialism in order to disintegrate the Soviet Union according to the strategy of “winning without fighting”.

Later, Russian historical researchers, political and military analysts concluded that the campaign to distort the Soviet Union's role in World War II played a decisive role in the collapse of the world's first socialist state. They believed that the information war of the United States and Western countries had done what hundreds of elite divisions of Nazi Germany could not do in World War II. The history of the Soviet Union was distorted by those who called themselves "research experts" and "historians" with a more destructive effect than nuclear weapons! Under the influence of the propaganda of reactionary forces and political opportunists, many Soviet people, even some cadres and party members, began to be confused, doubting the leadership role and peaceful foreign policy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and doubting the values of socialism. Therefore, their will was completely paralyzed, and they no longer had the will to resist when M. Gorbachev announced the dissolution of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union, even though that announcement blatantly violated the Soviet Constitution.

Today, although the Soviet Union no longer exists, reactionary forces and political opportunists continue to promote a propaganda campaign to distort history, considering the Soviet Union as the "invading country of Europe" to infer that the Russian Federation - the country that inherited the position of the Soviet Union, is also an "invading country"!? Supporting this argument, the European Parliament passed a resolution affirming that Adolf Hitler - the fascist leader and J. Stalin - General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union were equally guilty of causing World War II. With this distorted argument, monuments commemorating Soviet Red Army soldiers who died in World War II in many European countries were vandalized.

Along with the campaign to distort the Soviet Union and Russia, elements who fought in the ranks of Nazi Germany evacuated from Europe after World War II and their descendants returned to power in the leadership apparatus of many European countries, marking the revival of fascist ideology. Faced with this danger, the Russian Federation proposed that the United Nations General Assembly pass a Resolution against the revival of fascism. This resolution was supported by the vast majority of UN member states, including Vietnam. To protect historical memory, the Russian President issued a decree to establish a Special Committee tasked with combating plots to distort the history of the Soviet Union and the peaceful foreign policy of the Russian Federation.

Blatant distortion

In our country, inheriting and promoting the great revolutionary tradition in the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, Vietnam has achieved many achievements of historical significance in the cause of national renewal and deep international integration over the past 40 years under the leadership of the Party, which have been recognized by many countries and international friends. Meanwhile, reactionary forces and political opportunists continue to use insidious tricks to distort and deny that truth. The more distant the historical milestone of the Great Spring Victory on April 30, 1975, the more dangerous the tricks of reactionary forces and political opportunists to distort history become in the context of Vietnam having established a comprehensive strategic partnership with the United States - the country that waged the war of aggression against Vietnam. In addition, Vietnam has also established a comprehensive strategic partnership with America's allies in this war such as Japan, South Korea and Australia.

Reactionary forces and political opportunists have spread blatant distortions that “the US did not invade Vietnam”, that “the US only waged war to help Vietnam approach civilization”!? They even claim that in Vietnam, only “the North invaded the South”. Therefore, they consider April 30, 1975 as “National Day of Hatred”! Influenced by such distortions, some people believe that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, “we should not talk about winners and losers”. Taking advantage of Vietnam’s establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership with the United States, reactionary forces and political opportunists have blatantly claimed that Vietnam’s war against the US was “unnecessary” or “completely meaningless”. Public opinion needs to be highly vigilant and resolutely refute such dangerous distortions.
