Finland's newly elected parliament on June 20 approved National Coalition party leader Petteri Orpo as the country's Prime Minister, ushering in a right-wing government.
Thus, Mr. Orpo will be the leader of a coalition government consisting of four parties: the National Coalition Party (NCP), the Finnish Party (FP), the Swedish People's Party (RKP) and the Christian Democratic Party.
In the April parliamentary elections, the above parties held 108 seats in the 200-seat parliament. After two months of negotiations between these parties, on June 15, the new Finnish coalition government was formed.
During the campaign, Mr. Orpo pledged to reduce the government's budget deficit through a plan to cut spending while reducing taxes and seeking to boost private-sector job creation.
The new Finnish government is expected to take office on June 20. The new Finance Minister will be Rikka Purra, head of the FP party, while NCP deputy leader Elina Valtonen will take over as Foreign Minister.
Finland's new government is pushing for changes to its immigration policy that will cut refugee quotas, improve conditions for work visas and make it tougher for foreigners to gain citizenship.
