According to observations by Thanh Niên reporters on June 11-12, along the shores of Ha Long Bay, locals and tourists clearly saw large quantities of styrofoam buoys drifting ashore.
Styrofoam floats drifted ashore at Hon Gai beach.
Particularly in the central area of Ha Long City, such as Hon Gai beach, Ha Long flower park, and Bai Chay beach, many tourists have to wade through the water next to smelly styrofoam floats.
Ms. Tran Lan Anh (a tourist from Hanoi ) shared: "In recent days, Hon Gai beach has seen a lot of styrofoam buoys drifting ashore, especially wooden posts and bamboo rafts surrounding the sea. The beach management is urgently cleaning them up to ensure safety and maintain the aesthetics of the public space."
Besides the Planning Palace, the Quang Ninh Provincial Fair and Exhibition Center is also packed with styrofoam floats.
Representatives from the Ha Long City People's Committee stated that recent heavy and prolonged rainfall, combined with high tides, has washed a large amount of styrofoam buoys from surrounding areas ashore in Ha Long Bay. Authorities are working tirelessly to clean up the debris, particularly at tourist sites. On average, hundreds of cubic meters of plastic waste and styrofoam buoys are collected from Ha Long Bay and brought ashore daily.
Regarding the source of the styrofoam floats, the Ha Long Bay Management Board affirms that there are no aquaculture areas using styrofoam floats within the Ha Long Bay World Natural Heritage site. Furthermore, all official and functional floating houses have switched to environmentally friendly materials.
Specifically, from 2022 to the present, when localities bordering Ha Long Bay such as Cam Pha City, Van Don District, and Quang Yen Town organized the handling of illegal aquaculture activities, a quantity of styrofoam buoys, bamboo rafts, etc., were not collected in time and drifted to the rocky islands in Ha Long Bay.
Authorities used boats to reach the rocky islands and collect the styrofoam buoys.
Furthermore, Ha Long Bay borders Cat Hai District (Hai Phong), a dynamic socio-economic area where waste is frequently carried ashore by the tides.
Moreover, because Ha Long Bay is connected to the ocean, a significant amount of marine debris is constantly carried in by ocean currents.
A huge amount of styrofoam buoys has been manually collected from Ha Long Bay in recent days.
In addition, some fishermen still dump garbage into the sea during their daily activities and fishing around Ha Long Bay, further increasing the amount of waste accumulating at this natural wonder.
Not only is it surrounded by water from the sea, but on land, many untreated domestic wastewater pipes also discharge into the Ha Long Bay World Natural Heritage site, contributing to water pollution.
