Omega-3 improves cholesterol, brain health and fitness
Researchers from five universities: Muş Alparslan University, Atatürk University, Erzurum Technical University, Inonu University, Karabük University, in Türkiye conducted a trial to evaluate the effects of omega-3 fish oil supplementation.
The trial included 30 men aged 18–30 years who had been strength training for at least 3 years, had no chronic diseases, did not smoke or drink, and were able to exercise at least 3 times per week.
Participants were not professional athletes or had used performance-enhancing supplements, such as creatine, omega-3 fish oil, protein powder, or amino acids within 6 months prior to the trial.
They were divided into two groups: One group took a daily omega-3 fish oil supplement and one group did not take it as a control.
Both groups did weight training and squatting 3 days per week, including one upper body day, one lower body day, and one total body day.
In addition, both groups followed a strictly standardized diet under expert supervision.
Results found that omega-3 supplementation had positive effects on heart and brain health, as well as improved physical performance.
Specifically, after 8 weeks of testing, the group taking omega-3 fish oil supplements reaped many health benefits that were superior to the control group.
Key health outcomes include:

Improves blood lipid profile. Reduces bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels, according to health news site Healthline .
Boosts antioxidant capacity . Increases levels of the antioxidant glutathione - which plays an important role in detoxification, immune function and protection against many diseases.
Improve brain health. Increases levels of "happy hormones" like dopamine and serotonin in the brain.
Improve workout performance. In particular, supplementing omega-3 fish oil during training increased one-rep max by 13.6% and one-rep max squat by 9.7%. At the same time, it improved strength, speed, agility and reaction time.
These results suggest that omega-3 fish oil could be considered as a performance-enhancing aid for people who engage in regular physical activity, the authors said.
The study authors also say these benefits could have a major impact on longevity, and more research is needed to better understand the effects of omega-3s on a broader population.
