Enhancing the status of nurses

In the process of medical examination and treatment, nurses are playing an increasingly important role. They are involved from the initial reception and guidance to assisting with examinations, carrying out medical orders, providing post-operative care, handling procedures, and answering patients' questions.

Vietnamese Nurses' Day (October 26th) is an occasion to express our gratitude and special appreciation for their dedication and silent yet invaluable contributions.

In countries with developed healthcare systems, nurses are considered the "heartbeat" of the healthcare system. In Vietnam, the shortage of nurses has negatively impacted the quality of treatment and patient care. Currently, the ratio of nurses is only about 17 per 10,000 people, placing Vietnam among the countries with the lowest ratios in Asia. This shortage doubles or triples the workload of nurses, leading to increased psychological pressure and risks in patient interaction.

Meanwhile, much of the stress in healthcare stems not from expertise but from slow response times and a lack of listening.

Recently, the story of healthcare workers at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital who bravely intervened and protected patients in critical situations, despite the dangers involved, has shed more light on the contributions and risks that nurses face.

The reality demands a change in perspective and solutions to enhance the status of nurses. The Ministry of Health and relevant ministries and agencies need to develop solutions to build a nursing workforce that is not only sufficient in quantity (meeting the target of 25 nurses per 10,000 people) but also possesses solid professional qualifications, proficient skills, and good soft skills, meeting the needs of comprehensive and modern care. This will contribute to building the image of Vietnamese nurses in the new era who are not only professionally competent but also dedicated, compassionate, ethical, and capable of sharing and spreading the humanitarian values of the healthcare sector.

Many argue that it's time to empower nurses to have autonomy in comprehensive care, reduce professional pressure, and contribute to building a humane healthcare system. When given autonomy, nurses can design individualized care plans, ensuring patients receive not only treatment but also companionship. Empowerment, not simply assigning more tasks, allows them to make decisions, be respected, and have their professional voice heard in the patient care process.

In this new era, nurses need comprehensive training, encompassing technical skills, clinical psychology, communication, case management, and networking with social resources. Equipped with sufficient knowledge, nurses can design individualized care plans that meet the specific physical and mental needs of each patient.

Equipped with sufficient knowledge, nurses can design individualized care plans that meet the specific physical and mental needs of each patient. It is essential to select and appoint competent nurses to management positions at all levels and provide them with greater opportunities to participate in the development and planning of healthcare policies. A respectful and protective environment for healthcare workers is crucial, as we cannot expect nurses to be compassionate when they are left vulnerable to occupational risks and violence.

In the context of increasing healthcare needs, the capabilities of nurses must also be upgraded accordingly. Nurses must not only master their professional skills and techniques but also be proficient in communication and problem-solving. Therefore, nursing activities need to be integrated with digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, and advanced care models to move towards a smart, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare system.
