Vietnamese Nurses Day (October 26) is an occasion to show them gratitude and special affection for their dedication and silent yet extremely noble contributions.
In countries with developed medicine, nurses are considered the "heartbeat" of the health system. In Vietnam, due to the shortage of nursing staff, there have been impacts on the quality of treatment and patient care. Currently, the ratio of nurses is only about 17 people/10,000 people, among the countries with the lowest ratio in Asia. The shortage in quantity causes the workload of nurses to double or triple, leading to psychological pressure and risks in communication with patients...
In Vietnam, the shortage of nursing staff has affected the quality of treatment and patient care. Currently, the nursing ratio is only about 17 people/10,000 people, among the countries with the lowest ratio in the Asian region.
Meanwhile, much of the stress in medicine stems not from expertise but from slow responses and lack of listening.
Recently, the story of medical staff at Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital bravely taking action, regardless of danger, to prevent and protect the safety of patients in emergency situations has somewhat clarified the contributions and risks that nurses face.
Reality requires us to have a change in our perception and solutions to improve the status of nurses. The Ministry of Health and related ministries and sectors need to have solutions to build a nursing team that is not only sufficient in quantity (meeting the target of 25 nurses/10,000 people) but also has solid professional qualifications, proficient skills, good soft skills, meeting the needs of comprehensive and modern care. This contributes to building the image of Vietnamese nurses in the new era who are not only good at their profession but also dedicated, compassionate, have professional ethics, know how to share and spread the humanistic values of the health sector.
Many opinions believe that it is time to empower nurses to be autonomous in comprehensive care, reduce professional pressure and contribute to building a humane health system. When empowered, nurses can design individualized care plans, helping patients not only to be treated but also to be accompanied. Empowerment, not giving them more work, allows them to decide, to be respected, and to have a professional voice in the process of caring for patients.
In the new era, nurses need to be trained comprehensively, from technical skills, clinical psychology, communication skills, to case management and social resource connection. When fully equipped with knowledge, nurses can design individualized care plans, meeting the physical and mental needs of each patient.
In the new era, nurses need to be trained comprehensively, from technical skills, clinical psychology, communication skills, to case management and social resource connection. When fully equipped with knowledge, nurses can design personalized care plans that meet the physical and mental needs of each patient. It is necessary to select and appoint competent nurses to management positions at all levels and create conditions for them to participate more in the development and planning of health policies. It is necessary to build an environment that respects and protects health workers, because we cannot demand compassion from nurses when they are left alone in the face of risks and occupational violence...
In the context of increasing demand for healthcare, the capacity of nurses must also be raised accordingly. Nurses must not only master expertise and techniques but also be proficient in communication and situation handling skills. Therefore, it is necessary to link nursing activities with digital healthcare, artificial intelligence and advanced care models, towards a smart, effective, patient-centered healthcare system.
