Developing tourism combined with health care

In the context of green, sustainable tourism and personalized experiences, destinations associated with relaxation and healing are becoming the priority choice of tourists. Located deep underground in the two communes of La Phu and Bao Yen, Ngoc Son natural hot mineral spring with rare high radon content has created a superior advantage for high-end resort tourism, contributing to positioning Thanh Thuy on the map of health care tourism.

Ngoc Son hot mineral water source was discovered by Geological Group 303 in 1982 during the process of making a hydrogeological map at a scale of 1:25,000. After many years of research and survey by leading scientists , the reserves and quality of the mineral source here have been determined to be high, reaching level B of 704 m3/day and level C1 of 366 m3/day. The special feature of Ngoc Son mineral water is its high mineralization (>2.6g/l) and stable temperature of 38.9 - 39.1 degrees Celsius, belonging to the type of hot natural mineral water, highly mineralized, very suitable for therapeutic bathing and health recovery activities. Notably, the concentration of Radon in many water samples surveyed here is up to 5.89 nCi/l, exceeding the European Radon mineral water standard (5 nCi/l), 4-6 times higher than the international standard. This affirms the special value of Thanh Thuy hot mineral spring as one of the rare Radon mineral water areas in the world, comparable to famous areas in Germany, Austria and Japan.

Radon mineral water has been known since 1911 in Germany and was not recognized in Japan until 1983. Since then, many medical studies have shown that Radon in appropriate doses has the effect of stimulating the immune system, supporting the treatment of bone and joint diseases, nerves, cardiovascular, dermatological and especially helps to relax the mind and restore energy.

While the world has to search for and invest in exploiting rare Radon mineral water sources, Thanh Thuy owns a high-quality, stable and abundant natural Radon hot mineral mine, an invaluable resource for developing medical services, high-class resorts and health care tourism.

In the workshop "Mineral water, hot water and natural mineral mud - Potential for exploitation and use", Associate Professor, Dr. Do Van Binh - Head of the Department of Environment, University of Mining and Geology said: "From the analysis results of 113 water samples with the composition combinations, it can be assessed that Ngoc Son mineral water has good quality, ensuring the requirements for use for many purposes such as bathing, relaxation, bottling for refreshments, building a comprehensive cultural area, using heat to dry agricultural products or heating in winter. Taking advantage of the available advantages, Thanh Thuy can become a bright spot on the map of health care tourism in the North".

In recent years, hot mineral spring projects in Thanh Thuy have focused on exploiting and developing natural hot mineral springs, combined with resort facilities, entertainment and health care services such as: Thanh Lam Resort; Tre Nguon Resort; Wyndham Lynn Times Thanh Thuy, Vuon Vua Resort & Villas; Dao Ngoc Xanh tourist area,... At the resorts, services are built in a synchronous direction: Hot mineral baths, saunas, therapeutic massages, weekend resorts, nutritious cuisine and relaxing landscape spaces.

Visitors to Thanh Thuy can not only soak in the precious Radon mineral spring, but also participate in community experience tours, enjoy the specialties of the Ancestral Land, learn about the indigenous culture and enjoy the fresh natural space along the Da River. Many businesses are gradually building indigenous experience programs right in the resort, such as: Organizing weekend rural markets, cooking classes for delicious Ancestral Land dishes, experiencing making Muong ethnic handicrafts, ... thereby extending the length of stay and increasing the connection between visitors and the land.

We clearly identify the development orientation of health care tourism as one of the key points, contributing to promoting the local economy and improving people's lives in a sustainable way."

It can be affirmed that Thanh Thuy Radon hot spring is a special resource with high medical and economic value. However, to develop sustainably and avoid the risk of over-exploitation causing negative impacts on the hydrogeological structure, management, planning and investment need to be carried out in a methodical and controlled manner. The authorities need to soon issue specific regulations on the exploitation and use of Radon mineral water, not only from an economic perspective but also from a public health perspective.

In addition, the human resources serving health care tourism are currently lacking in both quantity and quality. Training a team of therapists, specialized guides, and service staff to international standards is an essential requirement to elevate the Thanh Thuy hot spring tourism brand.

In the near future, Thanh Thuy could be the “Onsen of Vietnam”, where tourists come not only to rest and relax but also to heal – both physically and mentally. Developing Radon hot spring tourism is not only an economic opportunity but also an opportunity to affirm the national brand of health tourism – a field with great potential in the post-pandemic context and the rapidly aging population.
