A man undergoing male gender reassignment surgery in Italy has discovered he is five months pregnant, joining a rare group of so-called "seahorse daddies".

Referred to only as Marco in Italian media, the woman had undergone a mastectomy and was about to undergo a hysterectomy at a hospital in Rome when doctors discovered the fetus, The Telegraph reported on January 23.

"Once the pregnancy is detected, the first thing to do is to stop hormone therapy immediately," says endocrinologist Dr. Giulia Senofonte.

"If treatment is not stopped immediately, it can cause many consequences, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy, a critical time for the development of the fetus' organs," said Ms. Senofonte.

The doctor added that hormone therapy suppresses menstrual cycles but is not a contraceptive, so people receiving treatment still ovulate and are able to become pregnant.

La Repubblica reported that Marco plans to keep the fetus so will be the biological mother, but will register as the baby's father on paper.

This is believed to be the first case in Italy and Marco would be one of a rare group of pregnant transgender men, also known as "seahorse dads" because male seahorses carry and give birth.

Italian law allows abortion after 90 days only if there is a serious malformation of the fetus or a significant health risk to the mother.
