Criticize the management unit for letting the thousand-year-old Cham tower be flooded

On November 7, Mr. Hoang Hai Minh, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, inspected the prolonged flooding situation at the Phu Dien Cham tower relic, located in Phu Vinh commune.

At the time of inspection, Mr. Hoang Hai Minh severely criticized the management unit and local authorities for being slow in implementing the treatment plan, allowing the relic to be submerged in water for a long time.

According to Mr. Minh, the thousand-year-old Cham tower area is not in a deep flood area like other low-lying areas.

However, the unit directly managing the relic and the Phu Vinh commune government have been proactive and slow in implementing the handling plan, and have not yet reported the incident to the city leaders.

The Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee directed the Hue City History Museum and local authorities to mobilize pumps and immediately drain all water from the relic area.

“After draining all the water, a pump must be maintained here to promptly handle heavy rains, to avoid similar situations,” Mr. Minh directed.

In the long term, the Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee requested the management unit to research and propose plans to protect the relic, and have more effective drainage and flood prevention solutions.

As Dan Tri reported, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, the Cham tower relic Phu Dien, Phu Vinh commune, Hue city was flooded for a long time.

According to local residents, the above situation has been happening for more than a week, threatening the safety of the construction.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Loc, Director of the Hue City History Museum (the relic management unit), said that due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, the Phu Dien Cham tower was flooded more than 60cm deep. This is the first time since its discovery that this relic has been flooded so deeply and for such a long time.

According to the Hue City History Museum, the above-mentioned ancient Cham tower was discovered in April 2001. At the time of discovery, the tower was located 5-7m deep under the sand dunes, 3-4m lower than sea level and 120m from the water's edge.

After the discovery, the authorities built a relic protection area with solid concrete blocks and planted trees around to prevent subsidence and create an environmental landscape.

The ancient tower is also preserved in a greenhouse to limit the impact from the natural environment.

In addition, Hue City History Museum has pumped a large amount of concrete into the foundation of the building to prevent subsidence and sprayed chemicals on the brick surface to prevent moss and mold on the material.

In particular, to help with drainage, a tank of more than 30m3 was built underground below the relic site. The management agency did not concretize the yard around Phu Dien tower, allowing for better natural drainage.

According to Mr. Loc, due to prolonged heavy rain in Hue city, combined with high tides, flood water in the tower area could not drain away in time.
