On September 19 in Hanoi , Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang chaired a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Traffic Safety Committee.
Reporting at the meeting, the Traffic Police Department ( Ministry of Public Security ) said that from December 15, 2022 to September 14, 2023, there were 8,333 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 4,763 people and injuring 5,802 people, a decrease of 194 cases (-2.28%), a decrease of 124 deaths (-2.54%), an increase of 161 injuries (+2.85%), compared to the same period in 2022.
Traffic accidents mainly occurred on roads, with 8,237 cases, killing 4,695 people, injuring 5,777 people, down 184 cases (-2.19%), down 94 deaths (-1.96%), up 158 injuries (+2.81%) compared to the same period in 2022.
Notably, the number of traffic accidents caused by drivers violating alcohol concentration regulations during peak periods has decreased significantly compared to previous years.
In addition to the achieved results, the work of ensuring traffic order and safety in the first 9 months of the year still has shortcomings and limitations such as a number of particularly serious traffic accidents, causing death and injury to many people, causing public outrage.
The situation of gathering, driving in groups, and signs of illegal racing still occurs in some localities; traffic congestion in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City tends to become more and more complicated.
The reason for the above problems is due to the weak awareness of compliance with traffic safety laws and regulations of a number of traffic participants, drivers and business owners.
Party committees and authorities in some localities are still lacking in determination in direction, and in some places rely entirely on functional forces.
According to opinions expressed at the meeting, continuous patrolling, control and handling of violations combined with propaganda on mass media is a very effective solution, with direct educational and deterrent effects, changing the awareness of traffic participants in a better direction.
In addition to the above solutions, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang said that the Ministry is closely coordinating with the Ministry of Public Security to strengthen the application of information technology to tighten the management of traffic vehicles, aiming to make traffic participants "not dare" and "not want" to violate.
Concluding the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang highly appreciated the results achieved in reducing traffic accidents in all three criteria, especially from 2011 to present.
Regarding tasks in the coming time, the Deputy Prime Minister requested that functional forces be more drastic in patrolling, controlling, and strictly handling violations of traffic safety and order because practice shows that "if we act decisively, we will win".
The Deputy Prime Minister requested to continue reviewing and perfecting current regulations on traffic safety and order; enhancing the application of information technology in management; and completing the development of sectoral plans and plans of the remaining localities according to regulations.
The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the need to study and legalize the assessment of the impact of social infrastructure works on urban traffic to avoid traffic congestion in urban areas.
Regarding coordination between functional forces, the Deputy Prime Minister said this is still the weakest link, so it is necessary to develop coordination regulations to carry out each specific task.
