(Dan Tri) - Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance said that Ukraine may have to decide to give up some territories in exchange for peace with Russia.
In a statement on October 24, Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance said that both Russia and Ukraine are "exhausted" after more than two years of conflict and are looking for ways to end the war. "Both countries are having trouble finding men, because most of the men in both countries are fighting. They're having trouble finding women. They're struggling to get the equipment they need to send to the front lines. Their economies are in ruins. Their entire countries have been destroyed," Vance said. The "vice president" of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump explained that to end the conflict, both Moscow and Kiev would have to make certain concessions. When asked if he believed that Ukraine would be forced to cede some territory to Russia, Vance said that this would ultimately be a decision that Kiev would have to make. "When you talk to Ukrainian leaders, especially in private and even in public, they start saying this. They say this war can't go on forever. They don't have the manpower, they don't have the equipment, they don't have the money. So I think eventually Ukraine will have to make that decision," the US vice presidential candidate said. According to Mr. Vance, Russia will also have to "make a decision about what they have to do to end the conflict." He said it was necessary to bring Kiev and Moscow together and "engage in some real diplomacy ." Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier this month that the West appeared to have accepted the fact that Ukraine had lost some territory and hoped to admit Kiev into NATO in the near future. Zakharova referred to an interview by former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the Financial Times . He said that in exchange for joining NATO, Ukraine might have to give up territories lost in the conflict with Russia. The government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long made clear that it will not make territorial concessions in exchange for peace with Russia. Zelensky has said that Ukraine's territorial issues must be decided by the people of this country. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha earlier this month stressed the need to demand full responsibility from Russia and "restore the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula," rather than seek territorial compromises. More than two years after launching a military campaign in Ukraine, Russia has taken control of about 18% of Ukraine's territory, including the Crimean peninsula. In late 2022, President Zelensky presented a 10-point peace formula to end the conflict with Russia. Among the points of this peace formula are the demand that Russia withdraw all troops from Ukrainian territory, restore Ukraine's 1991 borders, and pay reparations to Kiev for the war. Meanwhile, Russia has set its terms for starting a ceasefire and starting peace talks with Kiev. The terms include the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from all territories that Russia has declared annexed, including Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, and a legal commitment from Kiev not to join NATO.
