2024 Box Office Hits Record Sales, Strong Recovery After COVID-19 Pandemic

Việt NamViệt Nam02/12/2024

For the first time since 2020, Vietnamese box office sales exceeded the record set in 2019. The two factors that contributed to this achievement were familiar box office "dark horses" - Tran Thanh and Ly Hai.

As of December 1, total theater revenue in 2024 has reached VND4,418 billion, based on statistics from the Box Office Vietnam platform. In 2019, this figure reached more than VND4,100 billion (announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), becoming a box office record in Vietnam during the period before the COVID-19 pandemic and the years from 2020-2023.

Thus, with an achievement of 4,418 billion VND and continuing to increase in 2024, the Vietnamese box office has strongly recovered after the pandemic.

Two familiar "locomotives"

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder and operator of Box Office Vietnam, said that although the platform does not have full statistics for 2019, this year's box office could surpass 2024, "so this year is definitely the best year for the Vietnamese box office, with 2 works 'Tomorrow' and 'Flip Side 7: A Wish' is the locomotive.”

The two films were released at the two most popular times of the year, namely Lunar New Year and the April 30-May 1 holiday, respectively. According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, "Tomorrow" revenue of 551.2 billion VND, "Flip Side 7" revenue of 482.7 billion VND. Total revenue of 2 films is about 1,034 billion VND, nearly 1/4 of Vietnam's box office revenue as of the end of November.

Notably, in 2024, the 4th day of Tet coincides with Valentine's Day on February 14, so revenue "Tomorrow" resonate

There are also a number of other Vietnamese films that have grossed over "hundreds of billions" in revenue. "Get rich with ghosts" (128 billion VND), Ghost (nearly 127.2 billion), "Devil's Ball" (108.4 billion). The two works with "close" revenue are "Bran" (96.3 billion), "See you again, pregnant lady" (92.7 billion).

The "locomotives" of foreign films include exorcism films from Korea. “Exhuma: Exhumation of the Ghost Grave” (VND 212.1 billion), “Doraemon: Nobita and the Symphony of the Earth” (147.5 billion), “Kung Fu Panda 4” (136.4 billion), movies “Despicable Me 4” and “Godzilla x Kong: A New Age” (140 billion VND), “Conan: The Million Dollar Star” (119.3 billion)

December, who exploded?

December according to Moveek platform statistics will have "The Prince of Bac Lieu " (6/12) and "Kaleidoscope" (December 27) These are both "heavyweight" movies with their own highlights.

"Kaleidoscope" is a famous novel by Nguyen Nhat Anh, which was adapted into a television series in the 2000s on HTV ( Ho Chi Minh City Television). The film crew was directed by Vo Thanh Hoa. He is considered one of the most potential young filmmakers in the market today, having had films that reached "hundreds of billions" in both his roles as director and producer.

According to the publisher, "Kaleidoscope" The film version continues to recreate the fun and confidences of school age, and features the three main actors from the TV version, aiming to attract not only young audiences but also middle-aged people who grew up with the film.

"The Prince of Bac Lieu" Directed by Ly Minh Thang, the film stars handsome actor Song Luan in the main role, and Kaity Nguyen - the most sought-after box office star today - in a supporting role. The film is expected to be popular with audiences in the Mekong Delta region, which is a major contributor to the box office success of films. "Flip side" (Ly Hai).

"The Prince of Bac Lieu" The film requires recreating not only the historical context of a time, but also the lavish lifestyle of the rich at that time. The film tells about real characters, but exploits many oral folk stories, so there is room for creativity.

The potential to reach “hundreds of billions” is there, but the two films still need to prove themselves to be truly worthy of the expectations of the general audience. If they achieve this, Vietnamese cinema will have an additional advantage in the sales race in 2024./.
