Starting from small models
In the middle of the lush green queen guava garden in Hamlet 8, Giong Rieng Commune, Ms. Le Nguyen Minh Trang (45 years old) picked fruit and recounted her career journey. Previously, she grew mango and dragon fruit but with low efficiency. In 2017, she switched to growing guava. Initially, she only had 30 trees. Seeing that the fruit was delicious and easy to sell, she gradually expanded to 500 trees. In 2021, thanks to the Commune Women's Union's support of a loan of 100 million VND, she was able to expand production. "Guava is easy to grow, has few pests and diseases, and can be grown for 6 months to produce fruit for sale all year round. My guava garden is harvested every 10 days, with a selling price of 15,000 VND/kg, earning a profit of more than 100 million VND/year, enough to support my children's education and stabilize my life," Ms. Trang said excitedly.
Also in this hamlet, Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Thuy (49 years old) chose to raise breeding pigs. Having no land, the couple lives by working as hired laborers. In 2018, she received support from the Provincial Women's Union for 2 breeding pigs. Thanks to her diligence, she has multiplied the herd, and now has 9 pigs for meat, which are sold twice a year. "I save up to do small business, do cooking services, and earn about 150 million VND/year, enough to send 2 children to school," Ms. Thuy shared.
Small but sustainable economic models like Ms. Trang and Ms. Thuy are contributing to changing the lives of rural women in Giong Rieng.
Women help each other in economic activities
Ms. Nguyen Thi Chi - Head of the Women's Association of Hamlet 8 said that supporting members and women does not stop at loans but aims at specific ways of doing things, guiding small-scale farming and livestock farming, taking advantage of mixed garden land, and encouraging family economy. "We check each member, those who lack capital are given capital, those who have land are given instructions on growing clean vegetables, raising chickens, ducks, and pigs. Women help each other with small tasks but with long-term effects," Ms. Chi said.
The entire Giong Rieng commune currently has 37 branches, with 10,270 members, of which 103 are poor and 214 are near-poor. In the past term, the Commune Women's Union had many livelihood models such as: Women saving, helping each other do business, raising pigs for breeding, growing fruit trees associated with eco-tourism... helping dozens of members escape poverty and stabilize their lives. In addition, the union also coordinated with sectors to open more than 20 training classes on cultivation and animal husbandry techniques and short-term vocational training; mobilizing members to convert suitable crops, apply science , technology, and digital transformation in production and business.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet - Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Giong Rieng commune shared: "The valuable thing is that the women of the commune do not expect support but know how to promote their internal strength, share experiences, and help each other do business. The Union focuses on the breakthrough of shifting from "giving" to "teaching how to do", encouraging members to start businesses, apply science and technology, contributing to enhancing the role of women in building a civilized life. Those results are the foundation for Giong Rieng women to confidently enter the new term with higher determination, contributing more to the development of the homeland".
Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Giong Rieng Commune Pham Khuong Duy said: “The models of women doing business have created positive effects, demonstrating the core role of the association in economic and social development. In the coming time, the Party Committee and the government will continue to accompany and create conditions for women to promote their confidence and creativity, contributing to maintaining the title of a new rural commune and moving towards the goal of comprehensive development in the new term.”
| In the 2021 - 2025 term, the Women's Union of Giong Rieng commune developed 505 new members, reaching 112% of the resolution target; supported 68 members to escape poverty sustainably; built 12 charity houses, with a total cost of 600 million VND; mobilized more than 1.5 billion VND for social security work. Thanks to that, the poverty rate of the commune decreased to 1.14%, contributing to building a commune that meets new rural standards. |
