Phu Tho prosecutes 73 defendants in large-scale drug trafficking ring

This is the case with the largest number of defendants ever in the province and is among the largest drug cases in the country.

Starting from the fight to destroy a drug retail point in Cam Khe district, Phu Tho province, identifying the ringleader as Hoang Van Thu (born in 1977, residing in Tung Khe commune, Cam Khe district), the investigation agency determined that there was a large-scale inter-provincial drug buying and selling ring.

On June 3, 2024, Director of Phu Tho Provincial Police Nguyen Minh Tuan decided to establish a special project and assigned the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department to preside over the investigation.

After more than 10 months of investigation, the investigation agency has so far prosecuted 73 defendants for the following crimes: illegal drug trafficking; illegal possession of drugs; illegal possession of military weapons. Of these, 29 defendants were proposed to be prosecuted under Clause 4, Article 251 of the Penal Code with the highest penalty being the death penalty.

Seized evidence included: more than 27 heroin cakes (nearly 8kg), more than 278,000 pink pills (more than 25kg), crystal meth (624 grams), ketamine (6.5kg), methamphetamine, ecstasy (MDMA), cocaine, marijuana, opium.

In addition, the investigation agency also seized 1 drug press, 1 drug pill press, 5 guns (including 2 military weapons), 20 bullets, 5 cars, and more than 100 phones. The amount of money frozen and temporarily detained is about 2 billion VND.

The successful destruction of the case not only prevented a large amount of drugs from being smuggled into Vietnam, but also dismantled a series of organized transnational drug rings, contributing significantly to the maintenance of security and social order.
