Quang Nam connects OCOP products with tourism

Enter the area, destination

At the end of April 2023, the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board (Duy Xuyen) arranged a booth to display and introduce OCOP products at the Khe The bridgehead area to serve shoppers when visiting the My Son Relic Site.

With nearly 200 products of all kinds, mainly handicrafts, OCOP products, craft village products, local specialties..., the booth is not only an effective point of consumption but also helps promote and introduce many local products to domestic and international tourists.

Ms. Van Thi Cam Tu - Deputy Director of My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board said that My Son relic site currently has 3 main souvenir selling points, most of which display OCOP goods and typical products of localities in the province.

“Putting OCOP products and rural products on display at the relic site not only creates diversity in goods and souvenirs but also creates favorable opportunities for many local products, especially OCOP products, to reach consumers, especially tourists, ” said Ms. Tu.

Quang Nam currently has 407 products certified with OCOP (61 products with 4 stars, 346 products with 3 stars) from 325 organizations, units, and enterprises (43 enterprises, 118 cooperatives, cooperatives, 164 production households).

Most of Quang Nam OCOP products are well evaluated because they have been strictly screened, evaluated, tested and recognized by authorities.

Notably, Quang Nam OCOP products are quite diverse in types and industries with 302 products in the food group, 32 products in the beverage and medicinal herb group, 24 pharmaceutical products, 47 handicraft products, 2 community tourism service products, ecotourism and tourist attractions. Most of these products have beautiful designs, suitable for tourists' psychology and tastes.

Recently, Hoi An City organized the opening of Hoi An OCOP Center in the old town area with nearly 100 groups of products, souvenirs, and gifts (more than a thousand units of various designs from inside and outside the province).

Particularly, OCOP products, typical products of Hoi An city such as the “collection” of animals made from recycled wood from Cui Lu Hoi An village, Thanh Ha glazed pottery, Cam Kim sedge mats, Cam Thanh bamboo and rattan, lion heads, masks, recycled paper… are all sold here.

Ms. Ho Thi Bong - Director of Hoi An City OCOP Center said that many of the products on sale are handicrafts that are beautifully and uniquely crafted to suit the psychology and tastes of tourists.

“Most foreign customers often prefer products with environmentally friendly packaging, light colors, and small sizes for easy shopping and take-away. Therefore, we require imported products to meet this requirement, and at the same time be suitable for the trend of green tourism and sustainable development,” said Ms. Bong.

Export on the spot

Consuming OCOP products through tourism activities is considered an effective method of exporting goods on the spot to bring local products to the international market.

Ms. Luu Thi Thu - Director of Quy Thu Production and Trading Company Limited (Que Son) shared that most of the company's products are consumed through tourism activities.

Up to now, Quy Thu grilled coconut cake has been available on the shelves of many shopping centers and souvenir shops in tourist areas, especially at airports, wharves, and supermarket systems in Da Nang , Quang Nam, etc.

It can be seen that bringing OCOP products to the tourism market is a necessary direction, contributing to positioning destinations, increasing experiences for tourists, promoting, boosting consumption, increasing the value of OCOP products, and developing the economy in rural areas. This is also the trend that OCOP products and typical products of Quang Nam are aiming for.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Tam - Dai Binh Xanh business household (Que Trung commune, Nong Son district) said that organizing the consumption of OCOP products associated with tourism will contribute to bringing the products far and wide.

However, to stably bring products to the tourism market, the State and relevant parties need to support the arrangement of space to display OCOP products in tourist centers such as Da Nang, Hoi An, etc.; and coordinate with travel agencies to develop programs to serve shopping tourists.

In particular, focusing on promoting and introducing OCOP products on digital platforms not only helps to connect consumers conveniently, but also helps tourists from all over to easily learn and understand when coming to Quang Nam.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ha - Deputy Director of Hoi An Memory Island, linking OCOP products with tourism will help bring benefits to many parties, helping tourist areas and destinations diversify goods and products; OCOP subjects consume products conveniently and tourists can also easily choose to buy local products to bring back as souvenirs.

At Hoi An Memory Island, since 2022, OCOP products and local handicrafts have been imported for sale, with very positive results, especially Quang Nam specialties such as agarwood, pepper, Ngoc Linh ginseng tea, handicrafts, etc.

However, in reality, if choosing the direction of consuming OCOP products associated with tourism, the subjects need to grasp the psychology and tastes of customers in order to change the design and color of packaging in the direction of small, simple, environmentally friendly products associated with relatively high product prices to meet the needs of tourists buying as gifts.
