Quang Ngai strives to overcome damage after storm No. 13

After storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi) made landfall, Quang Ngai province recorded many losses in human lives and property, with 3 people missing, more than 60 houses damaged and nearly 90,000 people safely evacuated. The authorities are urgently supporting people to overcome the consequences and stabilize their lives according to the motto "4 on-site".

Heavy damage caused by storms and tornadoes

Storm No. 13 combined with record high tides caused serious damage in many coastal and mountainous areas of Quang Ngai province.

According to the report of the Provincial People's Committee, by the morning of November 7, the whole province had 3 people missing at sea on Ly Son Island due to strong winds and waves; 3 people were injured; more than 61 houses had their roofs blown off or damaged. Of which, Long Phung commune was the most affected with 45 houses, Ba To 3 houses, Ba Dinh 2 houses and a number of houses in Ngoc Linh commune.

In Sa Huynh ward, about 200 houses were flooded, 20 houses had their eaves blown off, 15 shops along the coast had their roofs blown off; a fishing boat sank, 2 seafood cages were damaged; sea sand buried 200m of the Thach By 2 breakwater.

An Phu Commune recorded about 70 houses with roofs blown off, of which 10 houses had their roofs completely blown off, with estimated damage of more than 2 billion VND; the tornado damaged 13.2 hectares of crops, more than 100 urban trees fell, and 6 hectares of shrimp ponds were severely damaged, with a total value of more than 3.5 billion VND.

In addition, more than 5km of roads were damaged, over 100m of Nghia An embankment collapsed, and the Phu Tho riverbed was filled with silt from Tan Thanh village to Pho Trung. In Dong Son commune and Sa Huynh ward, the sea level rose about 40cm, cutting off traffic.

Long Phung, Tinh Khe, Mo Cay communes... were flooded and had landslides; the coastal road in Long Phung commune had a landslide of more than 230m. Some traffic routes in Ba To, Long Phung, Son Mai had landslides, fallen trees obstructing travel.

In Ngoc Linh commune, a school has a damaged roof. Ta Noat hamlet, Ba Vi commune has signs of cracks in Wang Voi mountain, with the risk of landslides affecting 23 households with 54 people.

In Van Tuong commune, the road connecting An Cuong fishing wharf, about 500m long, was severely damaged. In addition, in coastal communes and wards of Quang Ngai province, damage was recorded due to fallen trees, shrimp ponds, and traffic systems...

Urgently overcome consequences and stabilize people's lives

Immediately after the storm, authorities at all levels and functional forces of Quang Ngai province mobilized maximum resources to support people to overcome the consequences.

Accordingly, the Provincial Military Command has mobilized nearly 2,000 officers and soldiers along with thousands of militia, vehicles, canoes, and rescue boats to key areas. Four auxiliary command posts were activated in key areas to direct on-site response.

In Long Phung commune, more than 50 officers and soldiers of the Provincial Military Command's shock force coordinated with local militia to repair houses whose roofs were blown off by a tornado on the evening of November 6 in Vinh Phu, Thanh Long, My Khanh villages and village 7.

Clean up and clear roads buried by soil and sand

Major Tieu Van Luat, Propaganda Department, Political Department, Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command said that the armed forces are urgently helping people re-roof their houses and stabilize their lives soon.

In Sa Huynh ward, the government and the Defense Command of Region 5 - Duc Pho mobilized more than 70 officers and soldiers to help people level sand and clean up their houses.

An Phu Commune also mobilized militia and organizations to help rebuild houses. Kon Tum Ward mobilized the Ward Police, Ward Military Command, and Kon Tum Urban Environment Joint Stock Company to handle fallen trees.

Duc Pho Ward mobilized the Southern Quang Ngai Urban Environment Company to trim and collect fallen tree branches. Ba Vi Commune mobilized 23 households to evacuate from the area at risk of landslides on Wang Voi mountain.

In Tra Cau ward, about 40 officers and soldiers of the ward police, Pho Quang Border Guard Station, militia and people supported in reinforcing the lake bank, harvesting remaining snails...

The Provincial Traffic Police also worked through the night to clear fallen trees on National Highway 1 and National Highway 24, and to ensure traffic flow.

Before the storm, the province established 4 auxiliary command posts and 6 inspection and direction teams in key communes and wards; evacuated 30,490 households with 89,738 people to safety. The provincial Military Command maintained 24/7 duty, monitored the weather, and was ready to mobilize.

At an online meeting with localities on the damage caused by storm No. 13 on the morning of November 7, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha praised the proactive spirit of the Party Committee, government, armed forces of Military Region 5 and the Military Command of Quang Ngai province;

Urgently request to review damage, overcome consequences, prepare to respond to floods after storms, support the construction of new houses for households whose houses collapsed, ensure people do not suffer from hunger, cold, lack of clean water or disease; improve forecasting, and perfect disaster prevention plans.

Currently, the search for 3 missing people on Ly Son Island is being urgently deployed. In addition, localities also continue to propagate and mobilize people not to be subjective, proactively respond to complex weather, and minimize damage.
