According to Czech Trade Minister Jozef Sikela, traders in the country previously recommended that the Czech government allow imports of Russian natural gas.

“This week, the monthly report of the Czech Energy Authority said that some companies started importing gas from Russia in October,” Minister Jozef Sikela said.

Mr. Jozef Sikela also said that the Czech Republic "does not need to import Russian gas", emphasizing that the country has no problem accumulating gas supplies for the upcoming winter.

According to the Czech Trade Minister, Russian natural gas accounted for 1.2% of the country's total gas supplies from January to October.

Earlier, Mr. Jozef Sikela announced that the Czech Republic would not import gas from Russia in 2023 because the country had diversified its supply sources. He said that the Czech Republic already buys gas from Norway and receives liquefied natural gas (LNG) by sea through Western European ports.

“Russian gas supplies to the EU are the target of sanctions. Some countries cannot do without Russian gas,” said Jozef Sikela, stressing that the Czech Republic has tried to “ completely eliminate dependence on Russian gas.”

Chief economist at Trinity Bank - Lukas Kovanda said that 40% of gas supplied to the Czech Republic comes from Russia and is transported through the Lanzhot border gate, the border with Slovakia.

Recently, in an interview with Russian state television Rossiya-1, Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller also said that some EU countries, which previously claimed to have completely stopped buying Russian gas, are in fact still receiving fuel supplies from Moscow.

In 2022, Russian gas supplies to the EU market began to decrease due to sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and the refusal of a number of EU member states to pay for fuel imports from Russia in rubles, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Bulgaria and Finland.

In response to EU sanctions, Moscow demanded that countries supporting the international sanctions campaign against Russia pay for Russian gas in rubles instead of dollars or euros.
