Serious damage
In late October 2025, along Highway 62, convoys of trucks and containers moved slowly through bumpy roads full of potholes. In many places, the road surface was peeling off, deeply sunken, and water was pooling, making traffic extremely difficult and dangerous. Therefore, upgrading and repairing Highway 62 is not only a matter of improving the traffic situation but also the desire of tens of thousands of people in Dong Thap Muoi. This route is closely linked to the lives and livelihoods of farmers, traders, transport businesses and border trade activities.

Many sections on Highway 62 are severely damaged.
In the hot midday sun, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - a truck driver transporting goods on National Highway 62, quickly pulled over to the side of the road, passing through Thanh Hoa commune. He shook his head in dismay: "The road is seriously damaged, we have to constantly steer to avoid potholes. Sometimes the vehicle shakes violently, the goods fall over and get damaged. Meanwhile, the traffic volume of people and vehicles is increasing. Driving while always afraid of tire blowouts and lurking accidents like this is tiring, stressful and dangerous!"
Not only drivers, but also people living along the route are affected. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nam (residing in Tan Thanh commune) lamented: “It is a national highway but it is currently so badly damaged, the road surface is like a torn shirt. Not only motorbikes but also cars are terribly bumpy. People hope the government will soon invest in upgrading National Highway 62 to make traveling less difficult and safer.”
For the people of Dong Thap Muoi region, Highway 62 is not only a traffic route but also the “blood vessel” of their livelihood. Goods, agricultural products, materials, consumer goods, etc. all have to pass through this route. Therefore, every time a vehicle has to “crawl” over a “pothole” or gets stuck in a long line of trucks, the people become more worried.
Need to repair while waiting for investment to upgrade and expand
QL62 is more than 76km long, starting from QL1 ( Long An ward) to Binh Hiep International Border Gate (Binh Hiep commune). The route was invested in 1999, with the scale of a level IV plain road, 9m wide base, 6-8m asphalt road surface.
After more than 25 years of operation, traffic volume has increased, many sections of National Highway 62 have seriously degraded. Although about 3.5 billion VND is allocated for maintenance every year, this fund is only enough for minor maintenance and temporary patching, not for a complete repair.
From September 1, 2025, National Highway 62 will be handed over to the Road Management Area IV (Vietnam Road Administration). However, the allocation of capital for periodic repairs cannot be implemented because the route is on the list of investment preparation for upgrading and expansion using loans from the World Bank (WB).
Faced with serious degradation, on October 14, 2025, Road Management Area IV assigned Traffic Construction Joint Stock Company 674 to locally repair severely damaged sections (from Km18+350 - Km28+200 and Km45+500 - Km72+850), with a total cost of about 10 billion VND, expected to be completed before December 10, 2025./.
According to the plan, the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 62 is one of three National Highway routes (53, 62, 91B) under the project "Regional connectivity, climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta region", approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1445/QD-TTg, dated June 30, 2025. The project has a total investment of over VND 3,241 billion, of which site clearance costs are over VND 992 billion, construction and equipment costs are over VND 1,739 billion. Investment capital includes WB loans and central budget counterpart funds. The project scope is from Km4+200 (intersection with Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway) to Km74+000 (Binh Hiep International Border Gate), 69km long, including an 8km long Tan Thanh commune bypass. After completion, the route will meet the standards of a grade III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h and a road surface width of 11m. Currently, the Vietnam Road Administration is completing the Feasibility Study Report, expected to start construction in September 2026. |
