Resolutely implementing solutions to combat IUU fishing

On the morning of May 15, comrade Ho Thi Nguyen Thao, member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, chaired a meeting to evaluate the results of the implementation of the task of combating IUU fishing in Phu Yen province, preparing to work with the 5th Inspection Delegation of the European Commission (EC). Attending the meeting were members of the Provincial Steering Committee on combating IUU fishing, leaders of departments, branches and coastal localities.

According to the provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing, as of May 12, Phu Yen had nearly 3,000 fishing vessels registered on the national fisheries database system, of which 681 were 15m or longer. The number of vessels marked as fishing vessels reached 100%; the number of fishing vessels installed with voyage monitoring equipment (VMS) as prescribed was 677/681 (reaching 99.41%), while 4 vessels had not installed VMS equipment due to damage, being on shore, and not operating.

In recent times, with the drastic participation of the entire political system from the province to the grassroots, the fight against IUU fishing in Phu Yen has had many positive changes. From 2019 to now, no fishing vessels from Phu Yen violating the fishing regulations in foreign waters have been arrested or handled.

At the meeting, delegates participated in discussions and contributed ideas with the aim of thoroughly preventing violations in IUU fishing.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Thi Nguyen Thao requested coastal departments, branches and localities to strictly implement the central and provincial directives on combating IUU fishing, continue to monitor, detect, receive, verify information, thoroughly handle and update the results of handling fishing vessels violating IUU fishing, especially those losing connection to monitoring the journey; urgently complete the inspection, issue fishing licenses, certificates of facilities meeting food safety conditions, and install VMS equipment.

Comrade Ho Thi Nguyen Thao directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with the border guards, police and relevant agencies, units and localities to increase patrols, inspections and control of fishing vessels at sea, river mouths and at fishing ports; strictly handle violations in fishing activities, focusing on violations of VMS and permitted fishing areas at sea.

In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is responsible for reviewing and removing from the list fishing vessels that have switched to serving aquaculture and not participating in fishing; resolutely not allowing unqualified fishing vessels to leave port to participate in fishing; proposing solutions for better management of traditional fishing ports...

Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Ho Thi Nguyen Thao also requested departments, branches and localities to carefully prepare the program, content and working plan with the 5th inspection team according to the instructions of the National Steering Committee on combating IUU fishing.
