Documentary film vividly portrays journalist-soldier Dao Tung

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Journalism (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025), the Center for Digital Content and Communications - Vietnam News Agency (VNA) launched the documentary " Journalist-soldier Dao Tung, a life devoted to the cause of revolutionary journalism ."

The film is an emotional and authentic journey, recreating the career and great contributions of journalist-soldier Dao Tung, who held the position of General Director of VNA for a quarter of a century.

Journalist Dao Tung (1925-1990), whose real name is Do Trung Thanh, was from Phu Lang Thuong, Bac Giang province. He held many important positions: former member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; National Assembly delegate, Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 8th National Assembly; former General Director and Editor-in-Chief of VNA; former Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Journalists Association ; former Vice President of the International Organization of Journalists (OIJ).

With a duration of more than 15 minutes, the film vividly portrays the portrait of a special person - a courageous and intelligent journalist, an excellent leader, who devoted his entire life to the cause of revolutionary journalism in Vietnam. Throughout decades of hard work in the profession, he has always been a symbol of intelligence, discipline, talent and tireless dedication.

The documentary particularly emphasizes the leadership role of journalist Dao Tung at VNA, highlighting his great and lasting contributions in building a steadfast news agency amidst bombs and bullets of war, as well as shaping VNA into a national strategic information center in peacetime.

In the history of the establishment and development of VNA, journalist Dao Tung was both a long-time journalist and the head of the National News Agency for a quarter of a century. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam News Agency for nearly 11 years (1966-1977) and as Director General and Editor-in-Chief of VNA for over 13 years (1977-1990). Regardless of his position, he always completed his tasks excellently.

Journalist Dao Tung was also a pioneer in applying computer and electronic technology to communication activities, initiating and launching three important publications, contributing to affirming the VNA brand: News Week, Sports and Culture, Science and Technology and World Economy . In particular, the birth of News Newspaper marked the shift from the subsidy mechanism to the market, paving the way for a dynamic, committed and highly social way of journalism.

The film also pays tribute to his role in foreign journalism. Journalist Dao Tung represented VNA at many historic events, from the Soviet Union launching its first satellite to pilot Pham Tuan flying into space.

His foreign trips took place regularly with the task of comprehensively and regularly propagating foreign affairs and expanding foreign press relations in the socialist bloc.

Journalist Dao Tung is also an active advocate for international support for Vietnam, lifting the embargo and securing equipment aid for the National News Agency. He has made an important contribution to building the position of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the international arena, and is one of the leaders of the Vietnam Journalists Association honored to receive the OIJ International Journalism Award and the OIJ Medal for his contributions to the activities of this prestigious international press organization.

Through the stories of the next generation of journalists, former VNA General Directors Le Quoc Trung and Tran Mai Huong, along with their family members and the next generation of young journalists, the film not only evokes emotional memories, portrays the portrait of journalist Dao Tung - a personality, a life of complete dedication, but also recreates a glorious period of revolutionary journalism.

In particular, everyday details such as him working until 2-3 am, always meticulously with each news report, or inspiring his children to read books have helped viewers feel a passionate person, living his life to the fullest with his ideals and his profession.

Along with Tran Kim Xuyen Street, in 2023, Bac Giang city - his hometown - named a street after Dao Tung, as a deep gratitude for his great contributions to the revolutionary journalism career.
