According to Japan Today , a furry pet robot named Moflin developed by Casio Computer is becoming a sought-after product in Japan, thanks to its ability to develop a distinct personality depending on how the user interacts with it.
From its launch in November 2024 to March 2025, more than 7,000 products were sold, exceeding the company's target.
Moflin is equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) with more than 4 million different personality traits and is capable of recognizing the person who regularly talks to it as its “owner”. At the same time, through interactions such as petting or hugging, Moflin gradually learns the preferences of its owner and can change its personality and expression like a real animal.
For example, if it is interacted with and cared for regularly, it will become happy, secure and calm. If left alone, it can become stressed, anxious and sad, according to Free Malaysia Today.
According to Casio, this AI pet robot product is especially attractive to women in their late 30s to 40s, some even bring Moflin with them on trips and vacations.
According to Ms. Erina Ichikawa (42 years old) - head of the development team, the project initially targeted women, providing them with a companion to support and comfort them mentally when they encounter difficulties in work and personal life.
The inspiration for the project came after a company engineer brought a robot prototype into the office to illustrate the cuteness of small animals.
Each Moflin has its own personality, emotions, and life cycle, making users feel that their robot is “unique,” Ichikawa said.
“People can feel that their Moflin is different from someone else's Moflin, because these robots, like animals, express distinct personalities and emotions, and develop and have different sleep cycles,” said Ms. Ichikawa.
Currently, each Moflin product sells for 59,400 yen (about 10.5 million VND). The company even offers additional services, such as a “salon” that specializes in washing and cleaning the robot’s fur.
