Safari is the primary web browser used on about 11.87% of computers worldwide, compared to 11% for Microsoft Edge, according to Statcounter.
Surpassing Microsoft Edge, Safari regained the 2nd place in the top most used browsers, just behind Google Chrome.
Compared to Statcounter's data from 2022, Safari grew by more than 2% while Microsoft Edge grew by just 1%. Meanwhile, Google Chrome remained at almost the same percentage as last year, suggesting that the browser was largely unaffected by its competitors.
Safari browser is pre-installed on all Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad, Mac. Although it is in 2nd place, pushing Microsoft Edge to 3rd place, the distance between this browser and Chrome's top position is still very far.
In addition, Apple has added a few new features to Safari on macOS Ventura including web push notifications, shared tab groups, strong password editing, improved CSS – a new way to authenticate websites with Touch ID without having to create a traditional password.
Safari’s return to the top spot reflects the growth in global Mac revenue in 2022, despite supply constraints. Increased interest in Macs powered by Apple’s M-series chips pushed revenue to $11.5 billion in the final quarter of 2022, up $2.5 billion from the same period last year.
In the 2022 tax year, Macs generated $40.1 billion in total revenue for Apple, up $5 billion from 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2022, half of Mac buyers were first-time users, contributing to a significant increase in Safari's market share.
Chrome is still in the top 1 position with 66.13% of the global market share, Mozilla's Firefox is in 4th place with 5.65%, Opera (3.09%) and IE (0.55%) are in 5th and 6th place respectively.
Google Chrome ranked Top 1 with 66.13%.
In addition, from February 14, 2023, IE has been disabled by Microsoft, users cannot access this software after that time.
It's possible the manufacturer will release major updates to Safari next month at WWDC 2023.
