In the 42nd minute, defender Thanh Binh clearly pulled the shirt from behind of striker Rafael Struick and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Despite discussing with the VAR team, the decision to award a penalty by Tajikistani referee Gulmurodi Sadullo remained unchanged.
Indonesia's captain Asnawi Mangkualam took the responsibility of taking the penalty and goalkeeper Filip Nguyen was easily defeated.

Despite being praised for their performance in the 2-4 loss to Japan in the opening match of the group stage, the Vietnamese team was outclassed when facing an equally strong opponent, Indonesia, in the second match on the evening of January 19.
