Stable income

Changing the crop structure and bringing vegetables to the fields brings higher economic efficiency.
Changing the crop structure and bringing vegetables to the fields brings higher economic efficiency.

Preparing to harvest 2 hectares of bitter melon, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thuy (Binh Quy hamlet) said: "Growing vegetables is hard but the price is more stable. If the season is good and the price is good, the income is about 7-8 million VND/crop, if the price is low, the income is 5-6 million VND/crop."

Having 3 hectares of cucumber cultivation, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (Phu Tan hamlet) said: “I used to do farming but the loss was more than the profit, so I decided to switch to growing vegetables. Last season I grew corn, this season I grow cucumbers.

Vegetables have a short growth cycle, so they can be harvested quickly and have an effective capital turnover. Compared to rice cultivation, vegetable cultivation brings in three times more income. Vegetables are sold to the cooperative as soon as they are planted, so I don’t have to worry about the output.”

Purchasing agricultural products from farmers inside and outside the commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - Director of Ngai Tu Vegetable Cooperative, shared:

“In addition to the fixed supply to large wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cooperative has flexibly found additional outlets at small markets in Can Tho, Dong Thap, Tay Ninh, etc., which helps Cooperative members feel secure in production. The Cooperative is increasingly expanding its purchase of agricultural products, helping farmers feel secure in production and increasing their income.”

In recent years, people have also expanded their flower growing to serve the Tet market. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha (Nhat hamlet) said: "Every day I grow vegetables to earn income, when the cabbage season is in full swing, or near Tet, I help families produce seedlings. Thanks to that, I have a stable income."

Safe production

According to the People's Committee of Ngai Tu commune, since the beginning of the year, the commune has developed over 3,200 hectares of color crops, reaching 100.02% of the plan. Of which, over 1,500 hectares of color crops have been planted in the fields, 1,734 hectares of color crops have been intercropped in gardens, and 408 hectares of specialized color crops have been planted, reaching 100% of the plan.

Vegetables are grown in concentrated hamlets: Binh Quy, Nhat, Nga Cai, An Thoi, Binh An... The main vegetables grown by farmers are: cucumber, bitter melon, squash, pumpkin, long beans, sticky corn...

During the past term, the economic structure of Ngai Tu commune shifted in the right direction, the agricultural economy remained dominant. Farmers increasingly focused on economic efficiency, gradually replacing traditional production that only cared about increasing productivity and output. Accordingly, in the period of 2020-2025, 34.88% of the ineffective rice area was converted to growing fruit trees and vegetables. Continuing to promote the advantages of crops, mobilizing people to grow crops on 4,962.51 hectares, reaching 165.80% of the plan.

Mr. Le Hoang An - Chairman of Ngai Tu Commune People's Committee said: The locality has many potentials and strengths for agricultural development.

In particular, the commune has suitable land and soil conditions for cultivation and development of vegetable production. Farmers have tradition and experience in production, helping to limit some major pests and diseases.

Output is relatively stable during the year, vegetable prices remain at a high average level compared to recent years, so profits from vegetable production during the year are 2-3 times higher than rice production.

“In recent times, the locality has also encouraged farmers to apply technical advances such as producing safe vegetables according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP standards, organic production; using biological organic fertilizers, water-saving irrigation and agricultural film;
"Promoting production and product consumption linkages along the value chain between enterprises, cooperatives and farming households, to create stable output," Mr. An added.

Mr. Le Hoang An said: In the development orientation in the coming time, the commune will strengthen information work, warning of storms and rains so that farmers can proactively arrange suitable production times; pay attention to color development (especially specialized colors); guide farmers to produce safely, comply with food safety regulations, use fertilizers and pesticides to ensure the "4 rights" principle, and ensure quarantine time.

Organize production appropriately, maximize the potential of specialized vegetable production; recommend farmers to plant in different seasons, diversify vegetables, and apply technical advances in production to improve product quality.

At the same time, expand production and product consumption linkage models. Continue to develop and replicate effective models, especially high-tech agricultural development models.
