(NB&CL) The evaluation and screening of works from press agencies and local branches is always a crucial step in selecting high-quality works for each season of the National Journalism Awards. The 19th National Journalism Awards – 2024 is no exception; careful and insightful screening from the grassroots level will be the foundation for obtaining the best quality journalistic works…

Inspiring a spirit of "competition" to participate in the National Journalism Awards.

Every year, the period when the various levels of the Journalists' Association organize the collection, evaluation, and selection of works from the grassroots branches is crucial. The Journalists' Association, in coordination with media agencies in the area, not only guides and encourages reporters and members to submit quality works to participate in the competition, but also devotes considerable effort to evaluating and selecting the best works for submission.

Journalist Trinh Van Anh - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, and Chairman of the Bac Giang Journalists Association - said: "The selection of works from the grassroots level is very well-invested, from guiding reporters and members in choosing topics, themes, and special features to evaluating journalistic products, all are implemented scientifically and with high quality. One of our advantages is that we seem to have established a routine and instilled in each of our reporters a spirit of 'competition' to participate in journalism awards."

In recent years, Bac Giang Newspaper has consistently strived for innovation and improvement in the quality of its publications, with many works winning high awards in national journalism competitions and journalism awards organized by central ministries and agencies. Notably, last year saw many works winning prestigious awards such as: the National Journalism Award for articles on Party building - the "Golden Hammer and Sickle" Award; the Provincial Journalism Award - the Than Nhan Trung Award; and the award for articles on exemplary models of "Effective Mass Mobilization" at the provincial level...

“This tradition and foundation serve as a premise, a driving force, and promise of high-quality journalistic products for this year’s National Journalism Awards… ” – journalist Trinh Van Anh affirmed.

Selecting works from the grassroots level to participate in the 19th National Press Award:

The judging panel for journalistic works in Bac Giang consists of reputable journalists who are responsible for selecting and screening high-quality journalistic works.

Moreover, as someone holding "two roles" - both the leader of the provincial newspaper and the leader of the Association - journalist Trinh Van Anh believes that the guidance for members and reporters, as well as the methods of selecting and screening works at the Bac Giang Journalists Association, are very thorough, meticulous, and standardized.

The Chairman of the Bac Giang Provincial Journalists Association stated: “All journalistic works submitted by reporters are selected by the judging panel through the discerning eyes of media leaders, leaders of the Journalists Association, and reputable journalists in the area. We believe that the National Journalism Award is the most prestigious award, so the entries must be carefully and meticulously selected, and must be of the highest possible quality. Of course, this year there are two new award categories: creative journalism and multimedia journalism, which are very interesting and in line with current trends, but as it is the first year, we do not yet have a suitable roadmap for implementation as intended. However, we are trying to participate with some works in these new categories and will certainly invest more heavily next year.”

Striving for a quality season…

Thai Nguyen is one of the localities that "reached the finish line" earliest, on time, in the selection of works from the grassroots level. At this time, the submission of works has been completed, with 36 of the best works sent to the Central Office of the Vietnam Journalists Association .

Sharing about the implementation process, journalist Nguyen Bao Lam - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Journalists Association, said: According to the guidelines and documents of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Standing Committee of the Association allocated the number of works to the Branch Associations and Sub-branches to work with the editorial boards of press agencies to select works from the grassroots level. The Provincial Journalists Association coordinated with press agencies in the area, widely launching the campaign to reporters and editors, encouraging participation, especially in the two new genres: Multimedia Journalism and Creative Journalism. This is an opportunity for journalists to demonstrate their abilities and keep up with modern journalistic trends.

Selecting works from the grassroots level to participate in the 19th National Press Award:

Reporters from Thai Nguyen Radio and Television Station conducted live and online broadcasts.

Commenting on the journalistic works submitted to this year's competition, journalist Nguyen Bao Lam said that, fundamentally, members and reporters in the area have made great efforts in creating traditional journalistic works. However, with the two newly added journalistic genres, many reporters and editors were not prepared in advance, leading to challenges in selecting suitable works.

Although media outlets in Thai Nguyen have already produced many works that utilize digital technology and multimedia, to meet the competition standards, the works need a higher level of investment in presentation, content quality, and creativity. Furthermore, creative and multimedia journalism demands a high level of expertise in technology, from graphic design and video editing to data mining and artificial intelligence (AI).

Meanwhile, the majority of local journalists are still in the process of adapting to new technological tools. Not all media outlets have sufficient personnel and equipment to produce works that meet competition standards. This necessitates stronger investment in technical infrastructure, as well as in-depth training for reporters to enhance their creativity and application of technology in their work…

“With the determination of the Thai Nguyen journalistic team, we believe that there will be high-quality works that meet the requirements of the award. In the coming time, the Provincial Journalists Association will also strengthen professional support, organize workshops and seminars on multimedia and creative journalism to help journalists gain more necessary knowledge and skills, and improve the quality of works submitted to the National Journalism Award and other journalism awards and competitions at the central and provincial levels…” – journalist Nguyen Bao Lam affirmed.
