"Landslides and floods occur all over the country, special attention must be paid to forest protection"

(Dan Tri) - To have figures to prove the determination to protect forests, National Assembly delegate Nguyen Lan Hieu said it is necessary to investigate the actual use of precious natural wood to make items such as tables, chairs, cabinets, and beds.

This viewpoint was raised by National Assembly delegate Nguyen Lan Hieu (National Assembly Delegation of Gia Lai province) during the discussion session in the hall on the morning of October 28, regarding the report of the Supervisory Delegation and the draft Resolution of the National Assembly on the results of thematic supervision of "the implementation of policies and laws on environmental protection since the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 took effect".

Acknowledging the impressive results in the monitoring delegation's report as well as the orientations in environmental protection in the coming time, delegate Nguyen Lan Hieu said that in forest protection, specific statistics have not been collected.

“The monitoring team talked about reforesting the cut-down forests, but in my opinion, the most important thing now is to try to preserve the remaining natural forest area. Perennial trees are the lungs, and also an effective mechanism to retain soil and water, avoiding landslides and floods that are happening more frequently and more seriously in all regions of the country,” Mr. Hieu emphasized.

According to the delegate, the great value of forests has been affirmed in many documents of the Party and State, but the area of natural forests is still shrinking from year to year and shows no sign of stopping.

This situation shows that the plan to convert forests for socio -economic development purposes in many provinces and cities in Vietnam still needs to be considered and calculated, because it is expected that in the next 10 years, there will continue to be forest areas that need to be converted to serve socio-economic development.

Gia Lai province delegate suggested that the monitoring report should mention more specifically the situation of natural forest protection, clearly stating how much forest area will be used in the future, how to replant, and what trees to plant. Along with that, according to him, the plan to plant forests for production also needs to have a specific plan.

“In particular, we need to investigate the current situation of using precious natural wood to make items such as tables, chairs, cabinets, and beds,” delegate Hieu suggested, emphasizing that numbers are needed to prove that we are determined to protect forests and what results we have achieved in recent times.

The two root problems that need to be focused on to protect forests, according to delegate Nguyen Lan Hieu, are dealing with deforestation for wood to make utensils and taking forest land to develop projects.

Citing lessons from other countries, Mr. Hieu said that many countries have focused on protecting forests with laws. For example, Norway has a law against deforestation, and China has also made many improvements in afforestation and forest protection.

Emphasizing that Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by natural disasters, delegate Nguyen Lan Hieu emphasized that special attention must be paid to solutions to protect forests.
