During a press conference on the socio-economic situation in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of October 30th, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City responded to the issue of some artists creating works that deviated from cultural norms, causing public uproar recently.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hang, Deputy Head of the Arts Department (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports), stated that Ho Chi Minh City boasts one of the most vibrant, rich, and diverse artistic lifes in the country. As a major cultural and artistic center, it represents a blend of tradition and modernity, and the finest aspects of Vietnamese and global culture. Over the past period, the Department has consistently paid close attention to and provided strict guidance on state management of performing arts activities in Ho Chi Minh City.

Specifically, the Department has strengthened coordination with agencies and localities to contribute to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of state management. The Department also spearheaded the development of inter-agency coordination regulations among departments, agencies, and localities in Ho Chi Minh City to proactively monitor the situation and promptly address issues in artistic activities. This has led to the detection and strict handling of numerous violations in accordance with the law, including cases of temporary suspension or performance bans, which have garnered public support.

Some artists create works that deviate from norms, prioritize their individual egos, and are offensive.

However, alongside the positive aspects, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports noted that some creative phenomena still deviate from norms, prioritizing individual "self," and exhibiting offensive content, form, or expression. Some works and performances contain offensive elements, use substandard language, and employ forms unsuitable for the nation's fine cultural traditions. They fail to fulfill their role and function in guiding public awareness and aesthetic taste, promoting negative lifestyles, especially among young people.

"For cases of violations, based on legal regulations, the Department will take decisive measures to handle them. At the same time, the Department will listen to expert opinions and coordinate with organizations and associations to educate and enhance the spirit of self-awareness in complying with the law and the exemplary conduct of artists and performers, contributing to building a healthy cultural environment," Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hang shared.

For major political events and city festivals, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports and related agencies, based on the purpose and requirements of the event, have collaborated with appropriate creative components. In particular, the performing artists are emphasized not only for their professional competence but also for their professional standards and cultural conduct. The Department stressed that this will continue to be a focus in the future.
