This horrific incident took place in an apartment building on Danilova Street in the city of Makhachkala, Republic of Dagestan, Russia, late on July 15 (local time). The victim was famous boxer Timur Khizriev (29 years old).
Khizriev had just gotten out of the car at the apartment building and was about to return to his apartment when he was attacked from behind by two masked men using a “traumatic” gun - a type of gun that shoots quite dangerous rubber bullets.
According to witnesses and security camera footage, one of the two perpetrators opened fire right after Khizriev got out of the car, causing him to fall.
The two men fired a total of 10 shots, at least five of which hit Khizriev in the back, shoulder, chest, and arm. Since the gun was non-lethal (unless fired into a dangerous area), Khizriev resisted fiercely.
Security cameras showed the Russian fighter even knocking down one of the attackers before running away. The attackers then drove off in a white Lada Priora, with a third person waiting behind the wheel.

During the chaos, the attacker shouted and cursed at the boxer's family, leading investigators to suspect that it could be a personal grudge. The Makhachkala police are urgently working to extract video footage and collect evidence.
Dagestan Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Tatiana Golubova said the case is being classified as a special investigation.
After the chaos, Khizriev was rushed to Makhachkala Central Hospital for emergency treatment. There, doctors performed emergency surgery on him that night.
According to a source, the bullets were lodged in Khizriev’s shoulder, chest and hand, but did not result in serious internal damage. His post-operative condition is considered “stable” and not life-threatening. Khizriev himself is also considered to be recovering well.
On the morning of July 16, Khizriev's representative said he would continue to be monitored at the hospital for the next few days to ensure there were no dangerous complications.
It is expected that after recovery, Khizriev will be transferred to a specialized sports injury institute for physical therapy.
The incident immediately caused a stir in the world MMA community, especially when Khizriev was famous as the "undefeated champion".
Over a 10-year career, Khizriev has an undefeated record of 18 matches and is the reigning featherweight (about 66kg) champion of the 2024 PFL season, having received a prize of 1 million USD in this tournament.
