Son Duong is a purely agricultural district, with an agricultural land area of over 69,200 hectares, accounting for nearly 87% of the natural area with key crops such as rice, corn, tea, sugarcane, and fruit trees. Determining that agriculture plays a particularly important role in the economy , contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, Son Duong district has restructured the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development. Currently, Son Duong farmers have boldly converted ineffective agricultural models to potential models, helping many households escape poverty and have stable incomes.
A typical example is the Thanh Son hill chicken farming association in Thanh Son village, Hop Hoa commune, which has 7 members raising herbal chickens. Each year, the group supplies the market with 15-17 tons of chicken meat, bringing each member an average income of 100-200 million VND/year.
Mr. Le Dai Duong, Head of the Thanh Son Hill Chicken Farming Association, said that in the past, his family raised chickens but in small quantities and in the traditional way, so the efficiency was not high. Since participating in the circular farming model, he has been supported with good breeds, built airy barns and guided on the farming process, so the chickens have grown quickly. Currently, all members must strictly follow the process, keep a production diary such as complying with timely vaccination, minimizing antibiotics or not using antibiotics, only using herbal extracts. The floor of the chicken coop is made of rice husks, sawdust mixed with probiotics. The chicken manure will be completely deodorized by bacteria.
The circular livestock farming model will utilize chicken manure waste, compost it to fertilize many crops, such as: Jackfruit, guava, custard apple and some herbs, such as: Lao grass, purple khôi, white khôi, perilla, bitter ginseng, xuyen chi, lemongrass, ginseng... These plants will be used as feed for chickens in a circular way. "Because of the closed model, good barn hygiene, and guaranteed input feed sources, there are very few outbreaks of diseases in chickens. Currently, the amount of fertilizer from the chicken farm that is left over for the garden can also be provided to households in the area, creating additional income" - Mr. Duong shared.
In order to effectively implement the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector towards developing agricultural, forestry and fishery commodities, focusing on key products and specialties in a chain of linkages to ensure quality and high added value associated with new rural construction in the period of 2021-2025, Son Duong district has promoted propaganda and mobilized people to produce agriculture in a closed, renewable direction, making full use of by-products in agricultural production to save resources, reduce product costs, increase income, protect the environment, develop sustainably and create clean agricultural products, ensuring food hygiene and safety. According to Plan No. 415/KH-UBND, dated September 23, 2021, Son Duong district implemented the Project, with the goal that by 2025, the rate of organic fertilizer use on main crops (rice, corn, peanuts, sugarcane, tea, vegetables) will be over 55%; Most by-products in agricultural production are effectively reused.
By the end of 2023, the district had 49 products approved by the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province as OCOP products (12 products with four-star rating, 37 products with three-star rating); 54 products had built product packaging brands. In 2024, 14 livestock products were registered for production according to standards and regulations... many rural economic models brought high economic efficiency.
Up to now, Son Duong has formed concentrated commodity production areas, such as: Tea area (1,808.2ha), sugarcane area (1,706.5ha), medicinal plant area (56.2ha), vegetable growing area (459.9ha), forestry area (31,473.6ha). The total livestock herd is currently more than 18 thousand buffaloes, nearly 13 thousand cows, 177 thousand pigs, 1.7 million poultry.
Many farmers in Son Duong are boldly applying advanced science and technology to agricultural production, focusing on changing production methods from traditional to modern.
To date, the district has over 8,000 farming households achieving the title of Excellent Production and Business Household. These excellent production and business households have created stable jobs for over 20,000 local workers. Thanks to this, they have created high-quality agricultural products, ensuring food safety and hygiene, and being environmentally friendly, not only helping farmers increase their income, but also contributing to changing the face of agriculture towards building smart agriculture in the locality.
