Steam Deck Sued for Patent Infringement

According to ComicBook , Valve's Steam Deck is currently one of the hottest gaming consoles on the market, offering a great entertainment experience for gamers who are constantly on the go.

However, after its success, this game console is facing some trouble. Accordingly, Immersion, a company that dominates the market for haptic feedback technology on handheld devices, claims that Valve has violated one of the patents related to their products.

Steam Deck Sued for Infringing Immersion's Patents

The lawsuit, first spotted by The Verge, alleges that Valve has infringed on Immersion’s patents not only with the Steam Deck, but also with the Valve Index VR platform, SteamVR software, and Half-Life: Alyx game, among others. The lawsuit was filed on May 15 and says Immersion is seeking damages, royalties, and an injunction against Valve from using the alleged patents.

Before Valve, Immersion had filed similar lawsuits against major tech companies like Apple, Google, Sony, and Microsoft, all of which ended with the major companies settling with Immersion. While The Verge pointed out that Valve's hardware uses a different type of vibration feedback than previous cases, it seems like Immersion has a strong case after previous lawsuits and is likely to prevail.

This isn't the first time Valve has been involved in litigation. In April 2021, Wolfire Games filed a lawsuit against the company for antitrust issues, alleging that Valve's rules requiring developers to pay a 30% commission if they want to release their products on Steam stifles competition. That lawsuit is still ongoing, so it looks like Valve's lawyers will be busy in court for the foreseeable future.
