
Global "major surgery"
The old Cau Lau Bridge across the Thu Bon River was built from 1965 to 1970 with a length of over 841m. After being exploited for too long and under the impact of war and natural disasters, the project has seriously degraded and is unsafe.
On May 13, 2023, at span number 8 from the south abutment, an incident occurred in which the railing pillar and the eastern handrail were completely cracked. Faced with this reality, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (old) banned cars from crossing the bridge and at the same time arranged funds for a comprehensive "major surgery".
The project to repair the old Cau Lau bridge (connecting the old Dien Phuong and Dien Ban wards with the old Nam Phuoc and Duy Xuyen towns) started construction on September 30, 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by September 30, 2025.
The project's objective is to maintain the bridge's operational capacity, serving the travel needs of people and tourists ; sharing the traffic of light trucks, motorbikes, and rudimentary vehicles across the new Cau Lau bridge to enhance traffic safety.

The main solutions for the repair include: repairing damage, ensuring the stability of bridge piers; repairing damaged main girders and bridge decks; repairing and reinforcing the horizontal connection system; making sidewalks and railings; relocating and reinstalling lighting poles...
Quang Nam Traffic Infrastructure Management Center ( Da Nang Department of Construction), the project investor, said that the sunken pillar (pillar T8) and 8 pillars within the deeply eroded riverbed will be reinforced with 2 reinforced concrete bored piles with a diameter of 1.2m; the pile cap brace made of reinforced concrete is connected to the existing piles.
Open to traffic at the end of August
On the morning of July 29, technical staff and workers of the main contractor of the project, Quang Nam Traffic Construction Joint Stock Company, and the subcontractor, Tan Tien Investment and Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company, continued to construct some final items.
The contractor is making the sidewalk and bridge deck of spans 8 and 9, expected to be completed on August 5.

Deputy Director of Quang Nam Traffic Infrastructure Management Center Huynh Le Tuan said that through inspection and measurement of the riverbed at the bridge piers after the 2024 rainy season, it was discovered that 2 bridge piers (pier T17 and pier T30) were eroded further and needed to be reinforced to ensure stability.
The investor has reported and been authorized by the competent authority to add and repair the above 2 pillars. Up to this point, the reinforcement of pillars T17 and T30 has been completed.
Mr. Tuan said that the plastering of peeling areas, installation of drainage pipes, and cleaning of the bridge will be completed from August 10 to 15.
Expected to test load from August 7-10, report results for traffic opening. Strive to complete construction by August 15 and open to traffic at the end of August 2025.
On April 17, 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (old) issued Decision No. 947 on approving the adjustment of the total investment and approving the investment project for the construction of the old Cau Lau bridge repair project.
On April 3, 2025, the People's Committee of Quang Nam Province (old) issued Decision No. 852 approving the adjustment of the old Cau Lau Bridge repair project (additional reinforcement of pillars T17 and T30). The total investment after adjustment and supplementation is 38.7 billion VND.
