The area near the Dong Thanh reservoir project in Lam Ha district suffered subsidence and landslides covering an area of more than 50,000 square meters, damaging many houses.
After prolonged heavy rains, recorded on August 2, the residential area next to the Dong Thanh reservoir project had many cracks about 30 cm wide. Some places had cracks up to 50 cm wide, and the ground had sunk 1.5 m deep.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, a resident of Dong Thanh commune, said he invested 3.7 billion VND to build the house, and just moved in in March. However, on July 20, the entire land was pulled down, causing the house to crack, forcing his family and neighbors to leave to ensure safety.

According to the Lam Ha District People's Committee, the landslide and subsidence at the Dong Thanh reservoir project area was discovered in early July, after many days of heavy rain. At that time, a 20-30 cm wide crack appeared on the hillside near the reservoir construction area, extending through the gardens and houses of three households. The cracks widened every day, causing the ground to sink and slide down.
Statistics show that in the district, 9 households with a total land area of over 53,000 m2 were directly affected by the landslide and subsidence; 500 m of flood avoidance road was degraded. Currently, the local government has relocated these households to a safe place, at the same time put up warning signs and assigned people to guard 24/7.

The Dong Thanh reservoir project is being implemented with a total investment of nearly 500 billion VND, the reservoir area is 25.3 hectares. When completed, the reservoir will provide domestic water for 7,500 households in the area.
Faced with the situation of subsidence and landslides in the area near the lake, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee has requested the relevant agencies to handle the incident. The construction of the reservoir has also been temporarily suspended so that specialized agencies can survey and monitor to find the cause.
Landslides and subsidence have been frequent in Lam Dong recently, especially after heavy and prolonged rains. Most recently, on July 30, rocks and soil from Bao Loc Pass flooded down and buried the Madagui traffic police station, killing four people, including three soldiers. According to statistics, there are still 163 landslide-prone and at-risk locations in the province.
