The Department of Intensive Care and Poison Control at Duc Giang General Hospital ( Hanoi ) has just provided emergency care to a 22-year-old female student who fell into a state of severe septic shock due to group A streptococcus, with complications of critical acute pneumonia. This is one of the cases that progressed rapidly and was life-threatening from the first hours of admission.
The patient previously started with seemingly simple symptoms with initial manifestations similar to the common cold such as high fever, sore throat, dry cough and fatigue.
However, after only 24 hours, the condition deteriorated rapidly, with increasing difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, purple lips, and impaired consciousness. The patient was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit-Poison Control Unit in a state of severe septic shock, diffuse lung damage, and multiple organ failure.
The hospital's medical team implemented intensive resuscitation measures such as blood and sputum cultures to find the bacterial cause, invasive mechanical ventilation, gradually increasing the dose of vasopressors, continuous blood filtration, and early and targeted combination of antibiotics.
After 5 days of intensive treatment, the patient gradually recovered from shock, stopped vasomotor activity, improved lung function and regained consciousness. Two weeks later, the patient was able to breathe and talk on his own.
The patient's health deteriorated rapidly after 24 hours of flu. |
According to doctors, group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes) is a common cause of sore throat, but in rare cases, this bacteria can cause sepsis, toxic shock - leading to death if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
In particular, young people without underlying diseases can still become victims of this dangerous complication.
Doctors say this case is also a warning not to be subjective with common respiratory symptoms, especially in the cold season, when bacteria are active.
